There was a post on Bluesky that basically said “Imagine a world where Mozilla wasn’t completely ransacked by its upper management” and honestly, yeah. Says it perfectly for me.Google is shit, but Mozilla is no longer fit to fight Google’s dominance right now. The Gecko engine is solid, but there is not really an incentive to go for Firefox. No-one worth Firefox’s time actually cares about ad blocking, or Web Environment Integrity, or DRM. A lot of the normies will still use Chrome, and the power users who may have used Firefox (and maybe Presto-era Opera) have certainly moved to Vivaldi for the features they want. “They’re not Google” is not a good enough reason to get people to move.

       I'm using Firefox. I haven't really understood why I shouldn't TBH.

It’s more my frustrations with Mozilla fanboys trying to justify every wrong decision the company makes just because they’re not Google.

To be honest I never hear news about Mozilla, only about Google from mainstream media. I have no idea what Mozilla is doing. :furtease: I think “they’re not Google” is a dumb main reason to use a browser personally. Like, personally I use Firefox because:The developer tools are decent. It exists on every platform I use.It pretty much works all sites I use.The customisability of the UI is extensive.I can use extensions with it on my phone (which means I have a adblocker on mobile). They don’t sabotage extension functionality (my constant experience with other browsers). But, I guess I’m not a fanboy because at the end of the day because would I advocate others use Firefox? Not really. Would I advocate them use any other browser? Not really either.I don’t really have an idea what Mozilla could realistically do to get more adoption of their browser at this point.

I think the main reason why Chromium has spread is because it’s easy to embed. It’s why there’s so many Chromium-based browsers on the market, why Microsoft gave up on their Trident-based dream and why Google has so much power now.If I could throw ideas at the wall, maybe Mozilla needs to pivot into making Gecko the same way so people can easily fork the engine, with Firefox being the flagship browser. This is what the devs of Pulse wants to do - make the process of forking Firefox easier.

I wouldn't mind them focusing on that, but to add to that:Embedding Gecko in the past wasn't too difficult, I remember in Second life development, it was a relatively simple interface to work with. Second life switched engine because Gecko was being both slow and a bit of a memory hog, this was pre-Quantum (before Rust). XUL was another matter, XUL used to be easy to do with XULrunner and it seemed barely used so Mozilla dropped working on it. 3rd party forks of Firefox seemed insistent on continuing to use XUL instead of just taking Gecko on its own.I feel like many developers chooses Chromium like engines because it caters to the largest audience and makes it an easy with for users, it "just works". Especially when it's the most common engine on mobile and main browser now.
