Jason Scott's Century Rule: If a company or group promises 100 years of consistency, not only should you not buy that product or promise, you should consider withdrawing from using them.

@textfiles I was expecting some database related bullshit, and all I got was a miserable domain registrar grift. :D

@textfiles in the 90s I thought it was ridiculous that one could register a domain for 10 years. Surely there will be something better than domain names after the year 2000! Boy was I wrong

@textfiles@mastodon.archive.org I'd wonder if the domain name system would work at all like it does now in another century. Even if I have rights to it that far in the future, will those rights be relevant?

@textfiles I mean I’ve got a 1908 four square home and brick _will_ last that long (so will terra cotta or asbestos roofing tiles) but that’s just… expected for those materials? Making the promise seems like a “doth protest too much” scenario. Why say it, all brick should do this.

@textfiles @codinghorror I once purposed a “perpetual” licence for Invision Forum. 10 years later they argued that “perpetual” actually meant 10 years. My dictionary must be faulty.
