@grammargirl Jon Carroll was a fantastic columnist for the San Francisco Chronicle who periodically ran a mis-heard lyrics column, and he called them "Mondegreens." (there's a story behind that, of course--he's a raconteur extraordinaire).So I'd suggest something like a MNDPL8T (pronounced "mondeplate").

@grammargirl Well I think we should start with a term for the general practice of reading and interpreting the semantic content of vanity plates. I suggest: carmiotics.Now the phenomenon of getting it all wrong might be termed a carmiotic lapse, more humorously a carmiotic hiccup, or in severe cases a carmiotic breakdown, which gives rise to the possibility of roads which are prone to this phenomenon which are then carmiotic breakdown lanes. Or maybe cooler heads will prevail.

@grammargirl I once tried to make a joke by pretending to be shocked at all the terrible things I was seeing on ordinary license plates. The woman I was speaking to acted shocked. Probably she was just tolerating my obvious lunacy.
