I've started playing the piano again, and it feels like I'm using parts of my brain I haven't used in forever, and it's a bit like juggling:Oh my god, what's my left hand doing?! OH MY GOD, quick, switch, what's my right hand doing?! OH MY GOD, QUICK, QUICK, SWITCH, SWITCH what's my right hand doing?! Repeat. (But fun.)

@grammargirl I started learning a Schumann piece at the beginning of the pandemic, and I was very strong at the left hand alone, and I was very strong at the right hand alone, and when I tried to combine them it was like I had never seen a piano in my life.

@grammargirl I have a theory (and it's not a very good one) that you can either be really good at typing, or you can be good at piano; but they need entirely different physical skills. That's my excuse for being awful playing piano, anyway.

@cwwilkie @grammargirl I just started learning piano this summer after 30 years of playing violin and yeah, coordinating both hands doing the SAME thing is very different from one hand doing fingers and the other doing bow. (I thought my violin fingering hand would be better at piano, but it turns out it feels backwards!)

@grammargirl It helps to start playing with both hands the same notes from different octives.

@grammargirl #neurons do go dormant, unused waiting, coming back alive to report something old we make new again… it is sometimes an emotional trigger tooLike smell of smoke, tone of voice, verbal slight that triggers the familiar sensation Juggling is a very deep physical cognitive nonverbal itch…
