@grammargirl I encounter it a lot because my mother-in-law says it the way your editor does and it confuses the crap out of me every time. (She’s from central Ohio, for whatever that’s worth.)

I've been experimenting with GPTZero, which claims to be able to identify whether text was produced by an LLM or a human.Everything I know about how LLMs work and how humans produce language (I know a non-trivial amount about both, given my background in computational linguistics and psycholinguistics) tells me that you will never, ever be able to build something that can reliably distinguish between the two. And sure enough, GPTZero fails miserably. So many false positives.

As a writing prof, I’ve been making this point as forcefully as I can in as many contexts as I can, because I have seen too many people uncritically accepting the hype - in both directions, about the capabilities of LLMs and about the abilities of automated detectors - and my biggest concern is that schools will decide to use automated detectors and put their students through “reverse Turing Tests”.

And I know that the students that will be hit hardest are the ones we already police the most: the ones who we think “shouldn’t” be able to produce clear, clean prose. The non-native speakers. The speakers of marginalized dialects. So I’ve been pushing against every suggestion that we should adopt these tools.

@clive this brought me so much joy today! (I’m sick with COVID and can’t do anything other than scroll through stuff on my phone, so having non-awful stuff to scroll through is wonderful.)

@clive we used typewriters in my kindergarten "writing-to-read" class, and my mom still has the (accidental, and surprisingly menacing) "poem" I wrote while figuring out how the return key worked. It read:you cut thingsyou cut thingsyou cut things with a knife(We were practicing "silent k", I think!)I love the observations you've made in this piece; it'll be a fun one to share with my Cognition & Writing students in the Fall.

For the record: I don’t do April Fool’s Day. I just don’t. I don’t like lying to people and I don’t like being lied to. If the joke is “haha, you believed me and you shouldn’t have!”, well…that’s not actually funny, and I won’t, anymore.(And yes, I know there are pranks that are more silly than anything, and if that’s your jam, rock on with others who enjoy that, but I’m probably not in that set. I know, I know, I’m no fun!)

@grammargirl as a teacher of 1st year college students, I’m always a little surprised at how uninformed a lot of them are. (Not all, though: some are VERY informed!). I wonder if the ease of getting news is swamped by how easy it is to get ANY information, even mis/disinformation; like, is it only easy for us older folks because we have prior experience with the pre-social media news ecosystem and know what to look for?

@grammargirl @kbmcgowan I’m curious about how you could tell, too. (Not saying you can’t tell! But since my own writing often gets flagged as “not human” by the “AI detectors”, I’m very curious what sorts of cues folks are using.)

@grammargirl @kbmcgowan (and I’m a hell of a lot more angry with the folks putting these tools out without any concern for what they’re doing to educators and students than I am with students for using them.)

@grammargirl slight preference for :), but I think they both look weird following a period! (I guess for me, smiley is a replacement for end-of-sentence punctuation.)

@cwwilkie @grammargirl I just started learning piano this summer after 30 years of playing violin and yeah, coordinating both hands doing the SAME thing is very different from one hand doing fingers and the other doing bow. (I thought my violin fingering hand would be better at piano, but it turns out it feels backwards!)
