You typically expect Linux users to have a better understanding about privacy and security but this seems to be a blind spot for many

@BrodieOnLinux yep, when many think you're able to help fix their computer issues, just because you run Linux... despite the majority of us being average users!

@BrodieOnLinux You can also mention password managers and help people increase possibilities even more. Have a nice day! that's valuable and great topic.Hardware keys + password manager is great combination. I hope one day banks will be forced to give us options ...Like you mentioned, sms method is weak.

@sourcerer I do think it's unfair to say that SMS 2FA should never be used, yes it's not as secure as TOTP for example but most people are simply not the target for the kinds of attacks required to break SMS 2FA. Now if your name is Daniel Stenberg, Jeremy Soller, Linus Torvalds, etc that's another story.

@BrodieOnLinux Wish you best with the material. I believe everyone should be aware how to increase security. At least in my country, phishing is common (if statistics are true) and 2FA is great to know. Have a nice day!

@dirk It's certainly not utter nonsense, security is not a binary it's a sliding scale based on the attack vectors and for normal people it's perfectely adequate.

@BrodieOnLinux Honestly, I think more places need 2FA. Even if it is simple things like email or sms, something is better than nothing. I mean the passwords that most use are hardly secure. It's fine if less important accounts don't, but Github accounts that actually contribute stuff definitely need it. Maybe Google's new passkey system can be great, assuming it can be implemented as an actually open standard that respects privacy.

@BrodieOnLinux It wasn’t that long ago I saw a Reddit comment thread of people who always gave their user account straight up root access saying they couldn’t be bothered to use sudo and they were the only one who used the system. It’s the Dunning–Kruger effect, where someone thinks because they use Arch or a command line that they’re basically a Linux expert now.

@BrodieOnLinux because the normie mindset is indoctrinated into people which teaches the opposite.

@BrodieOnLinux that's because people are groomed into consumerism and not taught tech literacy...
