I'm ALMOST tempted to submit an application to Canonical just to provide an object lesson in how useless it is to judge an adult based on how they did in high school, but I could instead spend that time playing video games and come out ahead in entertainment valuehttps://blat.at/@m/110969219065761067

How did you rank in [subject] in high school: well I dropped out, so let's go with zeroHow did you score on university entrance exams: I went to community college, which doesn't require them, and then transferred to a BA program, which only asked for my college transcript because they understand that past performance in a similar environment is a better predictor of success. What was your degree result: Quaker equivalent of Summa Cum Laude, but do go on about how important high school is.

@Annalee I am reminded of a friend of mine, a PhD with multiple years of post-doc research experience, who years later got rejected for an entry-level civil service post because he couldn't provide his 'O' level exam passes (that's age 16 high school exams). A STEM PhD and a couple of other degrees weren't proof of educational attainment ...(This was early 1990s in the UK, but I suspect the idiocy of box-ticking exercises is universal.)

Personally I don't think performance at university level is much use in hiring; it's an at-best-fuzzy metric of how well someone will do in the working world, and if you have literally any evidence of how well they actually do in the working world, you should use that instead. But even aside from "school is not work and plenty of people who excel in one are mediocre at best at the other," holy baked in bias, Batman.

@cstross @Annalee I was once nearly prevented from starting at a job that I had been accepted for because the legally-mandated vetting process refused to believe that "Ben" is a short form of "Benjamin".Senior management had to be deployed, so that in the end it was only a 3 week late start.

@cstross @Annalee @kittylyst When I left academia (after several years as a post-doc) my first industry job wanted a copy of my PhD diploma.Sure, I’ll photocopy this nearly A2-sized thing (with any available photocopier only being A3-sized), with a big wax seal attached to it. It’s in Latin. Good luck with it.

@happydisciple @cstross @Annalee @kittylyst When applying for an academic program once, I had to provide a copy of my diploma. The conversation went something like:"What language is this?”“It's Latin. Like your own university motto. Universities like to say stuff in Latin.”"I can’t read it. That might say anything. Get it translated.”Fortunately, my alma mater (!) had encountered this issue before, and for only a modest fee they sent me the English version.
