Some people took hot mixing too far in the loudness wars.

@aviancer friends of mine are into all that sick teraout stuff and use these levels of loudness for creative effect. lots of skills involved. pretty funny tbh. my mastering engineer tends to go to -8 (!) LUFS for my techno while I usually tend to be a -12 dB kind of guy, but I guess it works.

@mnl @aviancer I've not checked such things before, what number should be around -8 to -12 LUFS

@hayley @aviancer I use "integrated loudness", probably. Mostly I use my ears now as I've become more attuned to listening to the effect of master compression (hint, it's not listening for the effect of master compression)

@mnl @hayley It depends on your target. Most places like YouTube will publish integrated (over the entire song) and momentary loudness standards in LUFS that you’ll want to follow.Otherwise what you publish will be automatically hit with attenuation that probably will impact the quality and your desired effect. So it’s better to do it yourself :)

@hayley @aviancer @mnl Integrated Loudness is the loudness over the whole track, this is likely to be your primary goal for a loudness standard, though your intended target may also publish standards for peak level and/or momentary loudness. The -23 level you have there is the standard for TV, and what's published in EBU R128 as mentioned by Aviancer. As you can see you're exceeding that by a fair bit, but if your target is Youtube you'll be fine since they use -14

@NeneExists @hayley Yeah fair thing to note specifically are the YouTube standards, probably most applicable for a lot of individual publishing :)Thanks for sharing your knowledge Nene.
