#FRZ peeps: we’ve suspended an instance for holding child porn. “CSAM” sounds so clinical; this was scantily clad pictures of little kids. Most of the public pics I hastily scrolled past claimed to be AI generated. Maybe, maybe not. Either way, I’ve also reported the instance to the FBI. Let the feds sort it out.(And along *those* lines, if you see someone shoplifting baby food, no you didn’t. But if someone hosts child porn, fuck them with a federal chainsaw.)

@tek this is why im afraid to host my own fediverse, im scared of the legal and moral ramifications of accidentally federating with a pedophile instance. especially since id be one of those admins who occasionally goes for a week or two without checking the mod queue.

@snickerbockers I get it, trust me. If you host a single user instance, you’re fine: just don’t follow nasty stuff. Here, I’m fortunate to have friends who alert me to things like that to act on. There are also blocklists you can follow if you’re comfortable delegating that out to others.

@divVerent @snickerbockers That’s not quite right. Your instance would only see that one user’s content. For example, people here follow others on mastodon.social, but that doesn’t cause all the m.s content to be sent to us.

@tek I think the term "CSAM" was popularized by abuse prevention orgs, I could be wrong. I don't know if I entirely understand the reasoning, but I got the impression that it was to make it clear that it's always abuse.

@tek some crypto scammer in a matrix chat im in tried to do a scam where they send a zip labelled as cp then its a ransom where they say theyll tip the feds that you downloaded a zip called cp if you dont send them bitcoin. Crazy times on the internet....

@tavi @tek because "pornography" is not inherently bad and involves consent. So calling it CP has the simultaneous effect of cheapening both the child abuse and the consensual aspects of actual porn. That's the logic. Porn implies consent and legality and children fit neither of those. Its abuse.

@nateb @tavi That logic makes sense. I don't think I'm persuaded to start using that language myself, but can see why others would. There are lots of words that have totally different meanings in different contexts. “She stole my heart" is sweet if talking about one's girlfriend, not so much if talking about a black market organ ring.
