My 9yo son gets to choose an instrument at school this year. He’s trying to decide between band and orchestra, and between trumpet and bass. What instruments are actually good for kids to pick up, with an easy enough learning curve that they don’t feel discouraged? (I’ve played piano forever and so does his sister but the mechanics of that seem a lot simpler to me…)Drums are a no.

@Noupside Adding my vote to “bass”!It’s a delightful instrument, in its large acoustic format; if he winds up being really into it and you need to travel, they make electric versions of the upright bass (the bass player in my country band uses one for travel!)

@clive @Noupside Is the bass definitely upright/acoustic? I've always really enjoyed electric bass, and think it has great learning curve and "play along" (to recordings) power that I fear trumpet has less of. That said, either is a gateway to a new wave of ska, so.

@allafarce @Noupside Ska lol yesI think this bass convo is in the context of school band/orchestra, so I assumed it meant acoustic upright though I could be wrong Electric bass is so much fun to play! I bought a Fender precision two years ago for a recording project and it’s a joy
