OK. How do you know if your rotors need resurfacing or replaced, or not? I don't want to be bulshitted by the techs at Brake Plus. That takes the cost of a brake replacement from $149 to $209 ($30 additional fee to resurface each rotor) OR to $349 ($100 to replace each rotor).

@MMA Some common symptoms of bad rotors include vibration or pulsation in the steering wheel, high-pitched squealing noise when braking, shaking steering wheel, brake pedal pulsing, vehicle taking a long time to stop, loud bangs while braking, large edges on the outer part of the brake rotor, and scratch marks on the rotor.

@MMA Get them done...and if you are happy with this shop...stick with them. Good mechanics are getting harder to find these days.

@NurseRatched I don't know these people. I'm afraid to get ripped off. I had a great mechanic that I trusted in VA‐‐ and he always took care of those things for me. I'm trying to find something affordable. But there's all these add-on costs! I wish I could do it myself.

@MMA They called your dilemma out...so they already proved honesty. That's a good start. See if they have a website... mine does and they have coupons. I certainly use those coupons too ♡♡♡ Good luck.

@MMA @NurseRatched I am on a Facebook group that’s specific to my make and model, all years. I had a question about price for changing rotors and got very good advice. You might find something similar.

@nchia @MMA @NurseRatched Scratching likely metal on the worn pad. Once you get metal on metal, you'll need rotors. Many shops don't turn them anymore. 1) no longer cost effective 2) don't have the equipment to do it in house. Check out shop rates (cost/hr)... usually posted on the wall. Unfortunately, shops markup the parts they bring in. I've seen this to be 40% at one shop that used NAPA parts.

@BGrilln365247 @MMA @NurseRatched Yeah, I was advised by my mechanic had to be changed, and do both sides at the same time. FB group confirmed, told me rough prices of parts and how much labour costs would be fair. I trust my mechanic anyway, who comes on-site. This was good confirmation from the group however. Only thing for those new to any group is finding out the really knowledgeable and helpful members.

@nchia @BGrilln365247 @NurseRatched I called three shops.*One shop was the first that I quoted. They would resurface the rotors but there were a lot of "if A than B" variables.*The second shop is smaller and told me that they would not do the work without new rotors for our safety, and because they could give us a better price. They quoted $380 for all, and a 2 year warranty and could do the job Monday.*The third shop quoted $490 and can do tomorrow.I'm going with the second shop.

My brother is going to do the rear brakes with me so I can do them myself from now on. But since I can't drive to San Antonio on my front brakes, they have to be done by someone else this time.I'm a little stressed about the cost but I'm going to pray about it and post some more shoes and furniture on FBMP. I have made every other financial challenge through these little sales. I'm going to step out in faith and trust that the Lord will sell a cow for me to cover this unexpected expense too.

@NurseRatched @MMA When it comes to resurfacing rotors the minimum material thickness is a spec after machining and truing them up. If that spec cannot be achieved after machining and truing them up, they will have to be replaced.Cheaper rotors suffer material loss quicker under premium pads. They also have a tendency to warp under heavy or extreme frequent braking. You need someone you know and trust to assess so you don't get jive talked into victim status.https://youtu.be/wk7fYBw6PfQ?si=3AWUx34cdRVGhzc2

@JackONeill @NurseRatched I'm replacing them along with the pads. I had the brakes checked on both CRVs before we left VA and my mechanic said they were fine. But that was almost 2 years ago, it's 1700 miles to TX that we drove in mom's car, and most of the driving since then has been in this CRV. The car sneaked in another 40K miles since we moved here, and we're at 124K as of today. So I'm okay with starting fresh.

@MMA $380 sounds like a very good price. I just had to have my daughter's four brakes done for $1000. She had to go back to school the next week, so I had to get it done. It'll be good to learn rear brakes. The brake lines need to be bled. Fronts don't.

@BGrilln365247 I got a silver lining to my dark cloud: my brother decided to drive up from San Antonio to replace the brakes this Sunday for me. He'll also swap out the spark plugs while he's here.He gets a military discount on parts so we will have that additional savings. My son is coming up on Sunday evening to take his younger brother rock climbing for his birthday on Monday. He will do my oil change if my brother runs out of time.I already have hot Italian sausage and peppers made.

@NurseRatched @JackONeill Turned out to be the rear brakes. Down to the metal. My front brakes were actially fine. Which is why I didn't notice any lag when I was stopping, just a horrible scraping sound. The fronts were doing all the work.
