School started today. Only one other child in my child’s class is wearing a mask, for a total of four for the whole grade. None of the teachers are masked, including the visibly pregnant one. Wastewater has already been showing a steady increase the previous two weeks. High temps this week mean everyone will be indoors & windows will be shut.Hang onto your butts & cross your fingers. I’m betting there’s a classroom exposure before the end of the month. #covid #chicago #school #ClimateChange

@shawrd773 There's ALWAYS an outbreak of colds and stomach bugs, at the start of every school year.

@nosat @shawrd773 >>>>chicagoThere's a higher chance of a bullet outbreak in that classroom than a fake flu lmao

Not a single shooting here at this school but nearly a hundred covid cases (1/5 people) in less than two years says otherwise. People from outside who mouth off about #Chicago inevitably display how utterly ignorant they are about this place.(Have blocked and reported this person for misinformation, btw. I suggest you do the same.)

@PunishedD I sure don’t remember that, but I’m also old enough we didn’t have A/C at any of our schools (not that that would make a difference with stomach bugs). In Chicago it sounds absolutely decadent, but I’ve never been there.@shawrd773 … only a properly worn N95 class mask or better would protect someone like that pregnant teacher. At best, we thought surgical grade or less masks might help lower transmission to make a difference in keeping the curve bent, which I can testify from my local region’s Delta wave was essential to not needlessly lose people.Children … at what age do you think they can competently and diligently wear a mask for that limiting transmission purpose? Now, waste water surveillance is interesting, but with pretty much everyone having significant levels of natural and/or vaccine immunity, what makes you think this next wave will be of much note?Endemic is a thing, even if “the common cold” which includes four previous endemic coronaviruses, one perhaps the late 19th Century “Russian Flu,” and the nasty flu will statistically result in very bad outcomes for a few.

@ThatWouldBeTelling @shawrd773 The first two weeks of school are so predictably filled with flu, fevers, and stomach viruses, that doctors call it the “back to school plague”. https://www.childrens.com/health-wellness/preventing-back-to-school-sicknessCovid isn’t going to change it, it just changes the name doctors give to the flu.

@ThatWouldBeTelling We have preschoolers wearing respirator masks that diligently, even without institutional support. Given that vaccines do not prevent spread nor long Covid, it’s pretty damn cavalier to entrust our children’s safety to them as a single mitigation.

@ThatWouldBeTelling Endemic doesn’t mean safe, nor mild. It merely means prevalent throughout a population. Which should be a matter for horror, not complacency, given what repeated covid infections do to our bodies.

@shawrd773 Note, because of the ages of my family members, pediatric COVID has not been a focus of mine, so I don’t claim any expertise, just various suspicions. In particular I am unimpressed with the anti-vaxxers who are promoting a variety of elevated mortality statistics, albeit either non-pediatric or above age ten as far as I remember, without considering COVID vs. their precious of vaccines as a or the likely cause.Do you believe “normal,” without the usual risk factors children who get non-severe COVID are experiencing a lot of morbidity as a result of it?You would think the medical community, including ones outside the US hive mind, would be pointing this out to encourage following the Official vaccine dosing schedules. For the CDC, age six months for prime dose, 4-8 weeks for first booster dose, then wait until six years old for second booster dose. That huge interval between doses two and three looks questionable to me, depending on age weighted heart and heart lining side effects for mRNA vaccines, and a lack of interest, or data? about the protein vaccine in the US (Novavax’s).(Older folks, certainly starting by a minimum of age thirty, should avoid getting infected at all.)

@ThatWouldBeTelling @shawrd773 First, miscarriages.Second though, I would expect people outside of the U.S. would say a lot of obvious things but they don’t

@EvilSandmich @shawrd773 To use the rather ominous term I saw long ago, immunologically naive pregnant women had their womb etc. system “remodeled” when they got COVID. Increased miscarriages is something I’d expect. On the other hand, after getting some degree of either natural or vaccine immunity, what happens and at what rates?I don’t see what would keep all the people/national level organizations outside the US silent if the CCP gifted us a really consequential plague. Lots of different polities, although reactions like Xi’s to Australia would give the politicians pause. But enough to silence all of their civil society?Especially since once it was deliberately spread to the rest of the world we don’t have lot of options besides deciding the world has experienced enough millennia of lethal pathogens from mainland China and it was time to glass it, whatever the cost.Heck, global cooling global warming unfalsifiable climate change is going to “kill everyone,” yet somehow stopping the country that’s opening 1-2 thermal coal plants every week is not on the table.
