Why #US establishment has so much fear and loathing towards #China.Imagine if Americans say, “Whoa, whoa! Wait a minute! The Chinese retire at 54?” “What’s going on here in the capitalist paradise where 70-year-olds are forced to work at Walmart?”https://www.economist.com/china/2021/06/22/chinas-average-retirement-age-is-ridiculously-low-54

@yogthos I am no fan of capitalism, but:1 I don't trust the Chinese media. 2 The same article claims the average Chinese life span is 60.

@firebreathingduck life expectancy in China is higher than in US nowhttps://www.vice.com/en/article/v7vevb/us-life-expectancy-falls-behind-chinaMeanwhile, I'm curious what your mistrust of Chinese media is based on. Are you saying Chinese media is somehow less reliable then western oligarch owned media?

@yogthos yes, I think directly state-owned media is even less trustworthy than America's media outlets.

@yogthos the US failures to save our own citizens in Louisiana during Hurricane Katrina or in Puerto Rico during Hurricane Fiona, the US slaughter or civilians in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Syria, the US imprisonment of immigrant toddlers separate from their parents - these got some coverage. If the government directly ran the media, would they get any coverage? Does the Chinese government ever admit mistakes?

@firebreathingduck yeah Chinese government regularly admits to its mistakes and does coverage of good and bad things that happen in China, including ones that are negative for the government. For example, here's a documentary on Tianmen that westerners pretend is unkown in Chinahttps://web.archive.org/web/20200604205421/https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vDMXV1smwR0

@firebreathingduck Furthermore, there is non state media in China as well. There is more control over the media in China than in the west, but the idea that the west got the level of censorship fundamentally right while China got it fundamentally wrong is just an anchoring bias you have. There's certainly no indication that western approach is producing more factually based reporting which was your original claim.

@yogthos@mas.to The narrative that there isn't control over news and media in the West vs. states like China or Russia is laughably naive. The West operates under levels of obfuscation---the control and manipulation is all there, in equal or greater parts than geopolitical counterparts or adversaries, it's just better masked. @firebreathingduck@social.vivaldi.net
