the only explanation I can think of is either:a) the bus was late starting the routeb) the bus got caught up in Karori for ages, waiting at lights for all the private vehicles merging into the main road.

@cestfleuve c) the bus has to get from town to Karori, before it can turn around and do the trip back into town.Used to live at the south end of Karori years ago. Can confirm ; )

missed the last bus by literally seconds now I've 100% missed the train. There are all of 4 people on this bus. No way they took that long to embark.

this is my absolute largest gripe with our PT network—seconds make the difference between being on-time or being 30-60 minutes late. driver shows up 30 seconds early? you're half an hour late. bus doors take a second too long to open? the bus you were trying to catch has taken off, and you're half an hour late. bus is 3 minutes late? you're half an hour late.this is why I'm getting an e-bike. I absolutely cannot put up with this. I do not have the time to be 15-30 minutes early out the door.

in the time I spent waiting for my bus, I could have ridden to the station.

@strypey you'd think that would be accounted for the in RTI in the app, which is meant to be real info.

@cestfleuve > you'd think that would be accounted for in the RTI in the appIndeed. The only reason I can think of for that not happening, is that the RTI system is only as realtime as the network. I've noticed that the net can get as gridlocked at rush hour as the traffic, as people get home and start streaming tv shows or music, as they wind down from work.

@cestfleuveI just reread the thread and I may be misunderstanding you on at least a couple of points, but...The RTI depends on the net to get location data from the bus to your app. The digital network is overflowing with traffic for the same reason the road network is. People shifting en masse from work and home. So that might account for why the app isn't giving you an accurate location and ETA for the bus during rush hour.

@strypey the RTI information I'm talking about is when I enter the bus stop number into the website/app and it gives the same information that is on the board or would be on the board if that stop had an RTI board.

@cestfleuve> the same information that is on the board or would be on the board if that stop had an RTI boardYes, I figured that was what you meant by RTI. As I described, it works by having the bus push it's GPS location through the net - specifically the mobile network - to the RTI boards and your app. So if the net is gridlocked by people's post-work communication and streaming - or even just the mobile network - the RTI system could be falling behind.Does that fit what you observed?

@cestfleuve> it's bad at all hoursHave you reported this to anyone in transport oversight at the Regional Council? It could be caused by a software bug that's escaped their notice.Do you notice it across the bus network in general, or only the Karori bus?

@strypey I've definitely reported at some point, either as its own issue or as part of a larger complaint. There is no way they're unaware of how out-of-time the boards are because I know I am not the only one to complain of this issue.

@cestfleuve > I've definitely reported at some pointThen I guess you've done everything you can do, other than continue to feel frustrated by it ; )Metlink certainly seem to think their tech is capable of providing accurate RTI info on bus locations, to anyone who access their open data feeds: https://www.metlink.org.nz/news-and-updates/news/a-real-time-result-metlink-data-enables-google-to-display-real-time-and-service-information/Hopefully they figure out the problem with displaying it on their app and boards, and fix it soon.

@strypey sometimes buses will show up when one just went and there isn't supposed to be another for five minutes! convenient, sometimes. but maybe not for whoever wanted to catch it in five minutes and not right now.

@cestfleuve I can't help but compare the experience of using public transport in Aotearoa to the 2 years I lived in China. The services were so frequent, we only bothered to consult a timetable if it was mission critical to arrive by a particular time (eg to meet a pre-booked inter-city train). We had bicycles for getting around the local area and going on adventures, and we did occasionally use taxis. But we travelled mainly by public transport.

@strypey similar vibes when I visited Brazil. Missed the bus? Ah well, another one will be along shortly.
