A wooden table is made from wood.A glass table is made from glass. Why is a coffee table not made from coffee? This is actually relevant to domain modelling: sometimes we name things after their properties and sometimes their purpose. And sometimes we're talking about the same physical thing from the perspective of a different subdomain where it has a different name. These factors also play a role in determining how we decide to shape boundaries.#ddDesign #domainDrivenDesign

@nick_tune We used to have this argument all the time while naming filters. Do you name the filter after what it lets through or what it keeps out?Air filter, coffee filter... spam filter?

@stanley @nick_tune This is probably my favorite example with regards to naming conventions. May I use it in my presentations?

@afilina @stanley @nick_tune Woah. A coffee filter blocks the coffee (grounds) but lets through the coffee (drink).

@BarneyDellarI was involved in a project at Lufthansa many years ago, and during the modeling of "Check-In" software, they had 7 different meanings of the word "Flight" (their primary business purpose) but nowhere was it explicitly defined or using different names. From an Identifier, to plane in the air, to scheduled in the future, to completed, and more...And when requesting clarifications in each use, business people became very uneasy.@afilina @stanley @nick_tune

@niclas @BarneyDellar @afilina @stanley @nick_tune I noticed something similar in the Deutsche Bahn App. Once my Train ICE 1234 got cancelled on short notice. The alternative ICE 2345 was somehow identical to my original train (same departure/arrival times, same platforms).Turns out they use train for the vehicle as well as the connection and in my case they switched vehicles 🤷‍♂️

@niclas @nick_tune Simplified Technical English (STE) is valuable in those situations. One of the rules is that you can’t use the same word for multiple parts of speech. It’s intended for technical documentation but I find it has useful reminders for general UX.
