I was trying to convince an old Twitter friend to join Mastodon and they were like “well, how many followers do you have on Mastodon?” and I thought about it and realized that’s one of the problems with the Twitter mentality. On Mastodon—I don’t have any followers—I have friends.

I’ve been on Mastodon for less than a year and I have met SO many wonderful people that I genuinely love and respect and I never would have known about them if it weren’t for this place.

@Alice Counting followers is only useful if you're selling something. I am not selling anything. I am not an advertiser.

@Alice I learned that following hashtags is often better than following a person, who might not always be posting stuff I necessarily need to see. This type of curating is a more healthier way fill in the timeline.

@Wabbit I actually hate hashtags and tend to prefer to follow people with a sense of humor similar to mine, but that’s why this place is great. We all have the freedom to find a system that works best for each of us.

@Alice @Wabbit I have actually been scaling back my hashtag use because of you, but there are three or four I still use consistently, and I'm a dad so I think hashtags for comedic value are still worth it. 😁

@knapjack @Wabbit Nooooo! Don’t ever change your behaviors for something like me hating hashtags. I just ignore them. Please do whatever makes you feel best!

@Alice @knapjack Agreed! Do what is best for you.I myself don’t like the follow-for-follow that was so prevalent in the bird app. Up to a point where some had an auto-reply ready to thank new followers. It felt like farming huge number of followers was more important than either engaging with the person or content.Follow me if you think I am interesting enough. Or don’t; I’m fine with either as I usually boost and don’t post much myself.

@Wabbit @knapjack Yeah, when I started on Mastodon I would seriously follow anyone who even favorited one of my posts because I was like “They like me! They really like me!” but that just resulted in my timeline being totally out of control and then I couldn’t keep up with anything and it almost made Mastodon feel like a chore, so I’ve had to scale it back quite a bit just to be able to keep up. It bums me out because I know I’m missing out on a lot of great people, but I’m hoping that we’ll be able to have meaningful interactions and I’ll eventually get to know them better and follow back in the end. I just need to do it mindfully.

@Alice @Wabbit @knapjack FWIW I continue to follow with almost a reckless abandon. I tend to ignore the local and federated timelines and focus those I follow into Lists. The Advanced Web Interface and all of the mobile apps I use make this easy to do. Browsing my Lists seems to yield better opportunities to keep up and also discover.
