Dear #Fediverse friends,I have joined a number of groups (e.g. the local Makerspace) who organize using companies that spy on people. It's the usual suspects: Facebook, Google, etc.I want to help them switch to privacy respecting alternatives. Here's the thing, they can't afford €6/month let alone €6/month/user. So things like Tutanota are out (they'd likely be considered a "business", as it's a group of people, not an individual). It's hard to find privacy services for cheap or free...

So, please hit me with your suggestions. Privacy respecting, easy to use, preferably open source, preferably free (I know, it's asking a lot).- Mailing lists- Email hosting (with the group's domain)- Calendar- Website (with the group's domain)Keep in mind that not all the groups I'm in are as tech savvy as most people that will read this post. They can learn, but that requires their time, so it needs to be clear that the new things is better than the old, in their eyes.

@adam trouble is, at least in the UK, often these groups become companies because of the onerous nature of becoming a charity. That means they have to comply with DPA and GDPR etc. This narrows down the field even further. So people (not you Adam), please be considerate when broaching the topic, as "OMG evil how could you" is not helpful. I was part of a hackspace who moved from self hosted to gapps because the committee needed to be able to admin things not the pro sysadmin who was a member.

Oh, and chat. Some people are still hooked on Slack and Discord. The reason I forgot that one in my previous posts is because I have Matrix in mind. Any stable instance with open registration should be fine. But if anyone has any other suggestions, I'm open to them.Matrix is free, open source and can be e2ee. It's a good example of the type services that I'm looking for.

@adam I have been pretty happy running a group chat on XMPPThe handholding for onboarding is real, but that would be true of any new thing.

Oh, and if there are things that are cheap, and I can convince the group that it's worth the money, I'd prefer to support cool companies. To me, that means: Cooperatives, minority or women owned small businesses, companies that actively try to hire disabled folks, etc.

@adam for self-hosting, yunohost and owncloud cover a lot (incl matrix) but it's still, IMO, a bit too techy for a lot of groups. And the cost of a vps can be prohibitive.

@adam Not something I've looked into deeply. Does Proton work for domains, email and mailing lists?
