Facebook has been a vital communication tool during natural disasters, as well as a conduit for sharing helpful and lifesaving information. Canadian wildfire evacuees have struggled to keep loved ones in the loop when sharing news stories, due to Meta's move this month to block links to media sites. @sammi @TechDesk Don't complain that facebook doesn't post news when you charge them to do so. When you want to discourage an activity like smoking, you tax it. Canada wants to discourage facebook from linking to news sites and has succeeded.It's a pity Canada didn't tax collecting individuals' data.

@mikej @sammi @TechDesk there’s no government tax. Just requires Facebook and Google and others to negotiate directly with news organizations to pay fairly for the content they currently scrape and aggregate for free. Which they profit hugely from. TANSTAAFL

@canayjun @sammi @TechDesk Then don't complain when they don't buy it. I suppose the newspapers could buy ads to drive the traffic they're losing by demanding people pay them to send them traffic.

@mikej @sammi @TechDesk They already do. Huge amounts, and to Google also. Don’t get me wrong, I never remember a time when I checked FB for news anyway. I don’t think anybody should “make” them share links. If they don’t wanna carry news (and pay their fair share), screw em. FB is the freeloader here, not news orgs.
