This video is two years old but it's the first I've run across it, and it's blowing my mind. It's basically the story of how going for a degree in Creative Writing destroyed my up-to-then lifelong love of writing.I think it also validates my echoing cry of "don't get into streaming or vtubing as a moneymaker or career, do it as a hobby, for fun", because as soon as you start watching growth numbers and subs, your own joy and interest are likely to nosedive.https://youtu.be/fe-SZ_FPZew

It also ties into something else that's rattled around my head. I saw somebody's post pushing back on calling our experiences of fun "dopamine hits" etc., saying like "really? how do you know? are you actively monitoring the levels in your brain?"Maybe it's dehumanizing to buy into this concept that fun, enjoyment, drive, joy can be reduced to mechanisms of action of partially-understood neurotransmitters. Maybe we're assuming behaviorism is true, that it's all about a chemical "reward".

Maybe I don't pet my dog "because it increases my serotonin" and maybe I don't play RPGs "to get my dopamine fix".Maybe I pet my dog because I love her.Maybe I play games because they're fun.Maybe that's an understanding worth hanging on to?

@kaliranya Heh, that was a fun watch~> don't get into streaming or vtubing as a moneymaker or career, do it as a hobby, for funThis also applies to sooooooooooooooooooooo many other activities - my personal experience has it that I have the most fun doing programming when I am *not* doing it to fulfill some sort of external responsibility (that is, in a dayjob)...Unfortunately when it comes to jobs, at some point you gotta put some food in your tummy that you gotta compromise and do that once-fun activity for work and uhhhhhh :akkocry:
