I miss forums and useable websites. I don't wanna join a giant chatroom...Stop replacing everything with a discord server with no alternatives...

@bunnyconda @eddybelly We had the discord server of popular Minecraft mod, Figura, get deleted after one of the developers got outed as a pedo. All the documentation, support, resources, and custom content gone in an instant. Not to mention Discord's format is TERRIBLE for these things in the first place

@eddybelly the interesting question is what *does* discord offer people that it is so popular? People aren’t stupid, usually they have good reasons to use something.

@vonneudeck> what *does* discord offer people that it is so popular?"Everyone does that, so why don't we?" I think it's the status quo, when the question of organizing as a community arises, there's a person who can do it using Discord as he/her has already done that in the past. Discord isn't hard to use, most are more comfortable using chats nowadays than they are with forums, and it's still better than using something like Telegram 🤷@eddybelly

But there's also little cost, stake, and investment into a Discord community, that just makes it a shallower barrier-to-entry where everyone and anyone can start one, versus filtering down to people that will actually stick around and commit to something long-term. Although, weirdly there's a similar dilemma with fedi instances (despite being a much higher barrier to entry), that so many flake out so fast.Either way, with traditional communities, it was usually a website with a forum (or similar) paired with an IRC channel; so there'd be a medium of slower communication with more permanence and referencability (forum), while having a transient quick somewhat-private communication medium (IRC) where people could have more personal directed communication. That way you could handle a broader type of users, and have more options available.

It’s just the “but everyone’s on it!” mantra that people follow whenever they crowd to one platform. Also given that people are so anemic now to registering an account for an new platform anymore, that some people think it’s easier to get people into a group if it’s on a platform their target audience is already on.
