It's weird how a smartphone is replacing my wallet: I have almost all my documents in digital form with two passwords to access. I don't use a credit card, I do all my payments using my phone using a system that's so populated that everyone and their dog accepts. Nowadays a phone can replace house and car keys, add a Home Assistant integration for good measure. Using paper money makes me think I'm a criminal trying to hide my tracks.

Why am I commenting on that? Because I saw that @TechConnectify uses credit cards. It seems kinda retro nowadays. Well, it fits him, sure. That being said there are a lot of things here that accept something akin to "a chip on your car". Like, a lot: make an account with them, they stick a chip on your car and then don't worry about having to stop to pay parking on most malls in my city nor for toll roads. I don't use it, I don't really need it, but I notice a lot of people do.

@qgustavor At least in my local area, penetration of folks using Apple/Google pay is still quite small. From my perspective, and I imagine a lot of people feel similarly, carrying a card around is like the smallest possible inconvenience. I need my driver's license on my anyway.I don't need to offload that task to the phone, and frankly I don't want to.

Is it weird that many EV charging stations here are located on gas stations? You get the best both worlds: you charge your car and get all protections and conveniences of a gas station. But since here EVs are quite rare I never ever saw someone using those chargers and it would not be a surprise if those are not functional.

@qgustavor Also, while I'm generally not as tech-paranoid as some folks, good lord will I not let my phone act as my house keys. I do not have a smart lock and never will. The less services I have to sign up for the better, and I hope we see a correction where people value their data and privacy a little more.

@TechConnectify@mas.to @qgustavor@urusai.social Even ignoring the data / privacy argument, having a smartphone do everything sounds like the worst possible case of a single point-of-failure. Got your phone stolen? Congratulations, now you can't pay for anything, or take a bus ride, or even get into your own house.

@TechConnectify@mas.to @qgustavor@urusai.social Or let's not even talk about getting the phone stolen. What if a software update bricks the phone? As much QA as phone vendors do nowadays I as an Android developer still regularly see bricked devices without any kind of aftermarket modification (i.e. without bootloader unlocks, etc). Having one's entire life depend on that does not sound like a very wise decision.

@PeterCxy @qgustavor I also don't worry about how charged my keys are.
