       Growing up Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher told us that capitalism went hand in hand with freedom and democracy.  Today we can see that capitalists can quite comfortably walk hand in hand with authoritarianism and fascism to maintain and consolidate their wealth and power.

       @danwentzel Authoritarianism and fascism operate independently of capitalism. Capitalism should be recognised as flawed, and that some ways of practicing it are downright insidious, but I'm aware of no other socioeconomic system that has reduced absolute poverty worldwide than capitalism in all its various forms. Capitalism doesn't care for me yet it's the best we have. We should make it work for us, despite its weaknesses, rather than tear everything down to anarchism, and the feudalism that inevitably follows like it did in South Africa not long ago.

       @danwentzel Sadly, the ability to co-exist comfortably with democracy or autocracy is not limited to capitalists - it was socialists in Orwell's "1984", and much of the real world.But the mantra that capitalism would cure all that ails the world was much overblown.

       @bonifartius Much in favour of voluntaryism myself. I don't accept the general anti-cap answer of violence and the tearing up of everything in situ without a workable solution.@danwentzel
