@jellyosaurus that doesn't make sense blue sky can't federate with Mastodon ATP I believe is its own separate protocol meaning they're not a part of the fediverse

Fediverse is broadly anything implementing a federated social protocol. Yes, Bluesky doesn’t implement ActivityPub, but has it’s own federated protocol (although not openly federating yet). And before ActivityPub, there was OStatus; whereas in the transition to ActivityPub, there was inherently two semi-seperate networks.Just the same thing as when people wrongfully conflate that any mention of metaverse has to do with Facebook/Meta, when there’s been metaverse platforms like SecondLife that existed long before Neos, VRChat, Meta, etc

@arcanicanis @jellyosaurus well when i think of Fediverse I am thinking of platforms that integrate activity pub and any that don't i don't consider them a part of the fediverseif I can't follow somebody with my Mastodon account it's not a part of the fediversewhat you are describing is the blue sky verse

@arcanicanis @jellyosaurus Also, the definition on Wikipedia references activity pub.

“This is typically accomplished using the ActivityPub protocol” Also Wikipedia is not a primary source, it is best instead used for finding primary/external sources. I’ve been around fedi before ActivityPub existed, as well as making a few small commits to the standard itself.

@arcanicanis now tell me do you see blue sky here?In every single example of the Fediverse it's always referring to activity pub. activity pub = The Fediverseif the line above isn't the case then it's not a part of the Fediverseimage source: https://engagemedia.org/2020/facebook-fediverse-alternatives/andhttps://flux.community/matthew-sheffield/2023/05/mastodon-the-fediverse-and-the-revolt-of-the-internet-masses/even if the image I provided is out of date there are still countless examples of activity pub = The Fediverseif I can't follow somebody on blue sky with my Mastodon account it's not a part of the fediverse end of story

Because ActivityPub is presently the most ubiquitous protocol by far, AT Protocol is only just recently being developed as another option (since barely a year ago even). Just turn back the clock a couple years ago, and you wouldn’t even be able to subscribe to any ActivityPub-only servers of today, as Mastodon only got ActivityPub support in version 1.6, but federated using OStatus before that ( https://hackernoon.com/mastodon-and-the-w3c-f75f376f422 ). Meanwhile, there’s bridges for Nostr (via Mostr https://mostr.pub/ ), so if your criteria is “can I follow it from Mastodon”, then I guess by that definition Nostr protocol is part of the fediverse as well.
