I want to like Matrix / Element, but Element might be the worst piece of software I've ever used.Nearly every day, it either hangs indefinitely or forgets my login info, or some other bug (with most being showstoppers).The UI is confusing and I have a thousand rooms that I can't get rid of that clutter everything (as I've attended conferences from the past few years in it).When it works, it's nice and all... but it rarely ever works.I really *want to* like it. 😕

Perhaps it's confused due to years of FOSDEM, GUADEC, Fedora events, and more... and it's trying to sync everything? I don't want literally a hundred or more abandonded rooms that I can't dismiss (as it gives me errors).And there's no way to reset the history either. So there's no way to fix it.Perhaps I need to use a different server or something? Sigh.

@garrett Sadly I have the same experience, lots of friends are switching away to Signal or Discord simple because of the infamous indecipherable messages issue that lasts since last Autumn. If you ever hear about a properly encrypted, open and free, trustable, monolithic, decentralized, federated IM with a decent UX please let me know.

@KekunPlazas @garrett well, theoretically, there is #XMPP, but I think the community has long lost interest in developing the standard, clients, and servers :(Oh, and there is email, of course. With #deltachat providing a "chatty" UI on top of the email transport.

@Revertron Dino, Gajim and Beagle are all desktop XMPP clients used daily by many people.Of course "decent" is not something you can measurable objectively - everyone has their own requirements and preferences in practice. Just as some people don't consider Element or DeltaChat "decent".But that's why interoperable open ecosystems are essential: people can choose software that works for them without sacrificing the ability to communicate with their contacts.@muelli @KekunPlazas @garrett
