Facebook has responded to Canada's law requiring it to pay a small amount for having a link to news articles by banning those links: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/aug/04/canada-meta-news-ban-facebook-fake This could mean that the only links useds of Facebook see are disinformation.

@rms If people rely on Facebook for news they're lost regardless.

@rms Linking to other websites should be free, it's one of the foundations of the WWW and hypertext. Is Wikipedia going to extort people and companies next?

@rms or it could mean people will finally stop seeing Facebook as a news source(I'm trying to be optimistic about this but either way I just can not care about Facebook)

@rms I wonder whather the Canadians have checked what happened when Australia tried a similar approach. FB acted while legislation was being debated in Parliament. Early 2021, & FB blocked government departments, community groups, and emergency services as well: their work was sloppy. As I recall, FB agreed to legislation exempting orgs from fees for the use of news sites if they made signficant contributions to local news gathering orgs (paid into a pool to be shared between news groups.)
