I wonder how much better we could have made public transportation if we had taken all of the VC money that was dumped into "driverless" cars and just built more train infrastructure.

@jeff Even if we had, it wouldn't convince Americans to take buses or trains if we can afford a car. The overwhelming attitude, even if people won't admit it, is that if grown ass adults take public transit, they're either too poor to buy and maintain a car, or their driver's license is suspended/revoked. It's perceived as unhygienic and just plain low class. There may be exceptions in places where congestion and parking are exceptionally challenging, but it's nasty to the average American.
