       What we took for granted is that in the early days of YouTube, there were no fancy previews. There were no link cards nor thumbnails. And to that extent, the Rickroll remains a viable thing in comment sections (unless you happen to recognize dQw4w9WgXcQ out in the wild…)

       It was the Rickroll (or threat of something similar or more NSFW) that annoyed so many people that the previews were born. Links to the video on Facebook and Twitter couldn’t surprise you anymore. Which is where we get to the more modern meme engines.

       My thoughts on this started because there was a music video I wanted to share with others without giving away the context. The song is amazing, but seeing the performer’s name takes you out of the discovery.

       What we need is a protocol that allows us to override those previews. A “chromeless” experience. Ripe for abuse? Maybe. But there is a hell of a lot online that is also eligible for similar treatment.
