The great part about living in this time is that so many people have the ability to inexpensively write and create — sharing their thoughts with the entire world. What we took for granted is that in the early days of YouTube, there were no fancy previews. There were no link cards nor thumbnails. And to that extent, the Rickroll remains a viable thing in comment sections (unless you happen to recognize dQw4w9WgXcQ out in the wild…)

It was the Rickroll (or threat of something similar or more NSFW) that annoyed so many people that the previews were born. Links to the video on Facebook and Twitter couldn’t surprise you anymore. Which is where we get to the more modern meme engines.
