@animemer @thecatcollective there is countless software. Even Windows is now shipped with certain open source software. Another good example is nearly every Homerouter, Smart TV and many technical things that are daily used may be proprietary but contain open source software in the end.

@Jain Yea, this all started because our parents decided to try to take as corporate as possible a stand on software and act like everything that's closed source is a billion times better than any open souce software could ever be yadda yadda....-Astrid

@thecatcollective @animemer i had a feeling that this discussion started by non technical persons. Its quite simply, open source cant be avoided nowdays and its used everywhere. When it comes to the discussion, if proprietary systems are better than fully open source systems then certain comparison like cars can be used. Parents may remember a world where you could just take a car to any car repair shop and they could fix it. Cars nowdays are locked down and filled with technical features so that you simply need to bring a car to a certain specific repair shop because all the others dont have access to relevant informations to fix that car. Older cars could even be fixed by people themself while for never ones its nearly impossible to do so.

@Jain Our parents have very strong denial to almost all this stuff and act like it doesn't exist or that it doesn't affect them. For example, last week we tried to explain to our dad how windows 10 and 11 force updates on the user and how that bricked our BIOS (fuck you Dell and M$) but he kept trying to fight back and when we SHOWED him the auto update, he just said "nah you're just wrong"These are the people who are trying to hold this discussion on tech with us and it ticks us off.-Astrid

@thecatcollective @animemer Very sad story. Imho a talk with technical arguments unfortunately leads to nothing there, even if you are 100% correct. This is due to several aspects such as, one does not know it differently, lack of expertise, lack of interest in the technology itself, influence by advertising and much more.In such cases, it can be advantageous to refer away from tech and towards to a more political view: For example Planned obsolescence. Every person should be aware by now that certain things that are often used are built in such a way that they quickly break or became unusable after the warranty expires. For example, there are coffee machines, smartphones, laptops or many other things that are daily used. What would happen if those things are Open Source? One could repair them easily, install a android custom rom which still gets updates, install linux on a older laptop which then still can perform most of everyday tasks fast without the need for a new device.

@Jain We tried going the political route but considering they're very scattershot on politics in general it didn't go very well. They rant about planned obsolescence but in the same breath say "oh it doesn't affect me, I'll use $DEVICE until it dies and then get a new one maybe. It doesn't affect me what the corpos do"He thinks we "overthink it all" and tries to push us back to blissful ignorance in windows on a daily basis and gah it is annoying af. To him 99.9999% of the world doesn't matter. All that matters is that he can do his job and make money and that "wokeism" doesn't get him and that people "go back to being centrist" whatever the hell that means... We literally see him out of his home office for maybe 1hr a day...They (mum and dad both) are in-fucking-furiating-Astrid

@thecatcollective :blobcathuggiessad: And yet open source has nearly nothing to do with a political direction like left, center or right... But I see, there are obviously bigger differences multiple different cases and not only limited to tech stuff...In this case, it would be advisable to get involved less in such discussions and to concentrate more on doing it better oneself, thus providing proof that these things work... When they realize that you could use your phone/laptop or in general any other things longer, because you cared about such aspects like repairability, openness and quality, then they might change their opinion somewhen themself.

@thecatcollective In my experience, most of the time, parents will eventually respect somewhen what you do / certain ideologies, because the personal bond is strong enough that they will try to understand you and what you do. But this can take years
