@VikingChieftain @anderspuck @hanse_mina They must have seen it coming, they seem to light it up, but I can’t see any impacts of projectiles in the water, no guns? 🤔

@VikingChieftain @lethen @hanse_mina It’s essentially a military ferry. Allegedly they were using it for logistics to Crimea after the bridge was blown.

@anderspuck @VikingChieftain @lethen @hanse_mina which makes it a prime target.(I suspect the loss of a cruise missile carrying ship would have a bigger impact though).

@chowderman @VikingChieftain @hanse_mina These warships do provide real value, though. In this case for military logistics. They have a couple of handfuls more of them, but still it could be about 10 percent of their capacity they lost here.

@anderspuck @VikingChieftain @hanse_mina I assume that Russia couldn’t bring a replacement in via the Bosphorus straight but maybe a replacement would be small enough to pass through the Don-Volga waterway?

@chowderman @VikingChieftain @hanse_mina It's too big for the rivers. This one is actually from the Northern Fleet and was brought in before the invasion.

@anderspuck @chowderman @hanse_mina Wikipedia is a bit confusing. It says that there are 12 active Project 775s and 3 active Project 775Ms. But when you look at the list:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ropucha-class_landing_ship#Project_775_construction_dataThere just seem to be 5 active (after damaging Olenegorsky Gornyak).

@VikingChieftain @t_mkdf @chowderman @hanse_mina Aren’t those only the ones that they brought in from the Baltic and the Northern Fleets before the war. I think the Black Sea Fleet has four Ropucha and two Alligator class in addition to this.

@VikingChieftain @anderspuck @hanse_mina I think that the greatest damage will be psychological. To have video of one of your warships sinking may be regarded as a misfortune; to have video of two of your warships sinking looks like carelessness.

@chowderman @VikingChieftain @anderspuck @hanse_mina Don't naval ships have equipment to fend off these little drone boats? 🤷♀️

@sarahbeck @chowderman @VikingChieftain @hanse_mina Not really. They have machine guns, but you have to see the drone and be able to hit it.

@chowderman @sarahbeck @anderspuck @hanse_mina @AndersGottlieb But there must have been some anomaly on the radar screen. At least until it came close, then it might be below the radar. I'll let the sailors speak more about this. 🙂

@VikingChieftain @chowderman @sarahbeck @hanse_mina @AndersGottlieb I think these drones are invisible on the radar screen. There is a big difference between airborne and surface targets on a radar. On the surface you have a lot of clutter close to the transmitter from waves and other stuff, and this drone would probably hide in the clutter because they are so small. It's much easier to monitor the airspace.

@VikingChieftain @anderspuck @hanse_mina A lot of firepower and yet, apparently, no one fires at the drone, at least not close enough to show on the video.

@anderspuck @chowderman @sarahbeck @hanse_mina @AndersGottlieb Thanks, Anders! I'm sure they'll eventually cook up something to better detect against these type of threats. You thought the Iranian speedboats were a nuisance, but at least those have a bigger radar signature.

@anderspuck @VikingChieftain @chowderman @hanse_mina @AndersGottlieb so the problem with these particular weapons is not user fatique like you argued in the Moskva-video, lack of defence equipment? Does this kind of droneboat defence equipment (I'm not sure what to call it) exist?

@sarahbeck @anderspuck @VikingChieftain @chowderman @hanse_mina The problem at detecting these drones with radar is as Anders also said, that waves make some cluster, which you can suppresse, but then you might remove small targets. Furtheremore they are very low and very fast. So, they only shows a small being with some distance between on the screen if at all. At least on normal 3 and 10 cm radar. Naval ships probably have more sofistcated radar, though.

@VikingChieftain @AndersGottlieb @sarahbeck @chowderman @hanse_mina Yes, I think the primary tools for detection will be regular binoculars and infrared cameras. To defend against them, you probably have to look into passive measures like barriers and staying on the move instead of anchoring.
