@EvilSandmich The democratic system is supposed to be adversarial, that's a built-in requirement, but there should be respect. Dehumanization is a marker for authoritarian thinking. It's instilling in people the idea that only we are right, only we can be trusted, everybody else is a liar. That's what made the Republicans as terrible as they have become. It ends constructive dialog, polarizes and turns politics toxic.

Or you could look, for example, at Saddam's Iraq. A tapestry of small tribes and ethnic groups that Saddam played against one another with favor and status games. Upon Saddam's removal the local ethnic leaders promptly became warlords and began settling scores.
