Asking for a friend, well actually a daughter - is it legal in Ontario to force shift-work employees to clock out if they have completed their tasks but their scheduled shift is not complete?If yes, damn labour laws have really gone downhill, but a follow-up question:Is it legal for them to force you to clock out but still expect you to clock in again if something happens that requires you during your scheduled shift?#LabourLaws

@EvilSandmich The democratic system is supposed to be adversarial, that's a built-in requirement, but there should be respect. Dehumanization is a marker for authoritarian thinking. It's instilling in people the idea that only we are right, only we can be trusted, everybody else is a liar. That's what made the Republicans as terrible as they have become. It ends constructive dialog, polarizes and turns politics toxic.

@EvilSandmich I never accused O'Connell or any other Republican of being part of a death squad. Where is this death squad? Who has this death squad killed?I'd say Mitch was complicit in an attempted coupe, maybe, but politicians don't get their hands dirty. Their craft is rhetoric, and conservative rhetoric is largely based on fear of the other - conspiracies such as the 'great replacement', hysteria over immigration. If a death squad comes, it will spring from their base, not their leaders.

@EvilSandmich But just as I said in defense of O'Connell, where is this ethnic cleansing? What makes it real? I'm a cis white male, I don't hate myself or my culture. I look and see people mostly like me and recognize that I have an advantage due to historic wrongs I'm not responsible for, but I could help fix. Human rights is not a zero-sum game.I also recognize that what is keeping us down, is that which is perpetuated by those who claim the problem is race, ethnicity, gender or orientation.

@EvilSandmich You're seeing everything through race, though. I disagree that human rights are zero sum, but even if my head's up my ass, why is that marker of who gets rights and who doesn't? If we're got limited capacity, wouldn't our interests be best served by merit? You think I'd be eligible or you? Who decides? Or is it your claim that race is everything?And be real, our ancestors were only putting cash into the hands of the aristocracy. They didn't give a damn what they were creating.

@EvilSandmich Can I circle back to my post? During our thread I'm not trying to change your mind, you're certainly not changing mine. But I've read your ideas and tried to understand your viewpoint. This appears to have gone both ways. Our disagreement doesn't turn you into a monster to me - I don't want you hurt or punished. This is what politics looks like; not capitulation or consensus, but decency and honesty.In this way, it's not that I see the CPC as wrong, but as textbook fascists.

The MacDougall Creek wildfire has triggered the expansion of evacuations to parts of Kelowna BC (pop.150000). There were previous evacuation orders for West Kelowna (pop.36000) and the Westbank First Nation (pop 9000) on the other side of Lake Okanagan due to the same fire.
