@fuck_cars_bot Airbags, crumple zone, more passengers (bigger passengers too!), rollover protection, much less physically painful to get in and out of.Oh, also, that newer Mini gets better fuel economy than the older one. (Not by a lot, but it is there.)

@kithrup - Airbags don't take up that much space.- Rollover protection doesn't take up that much space (the old one has a lower CG, so is a lot harder to roll over as well).- Now imagine if they put a modern engine (which is more fuel efficient) into a small car (which weighs less, has less air resistance and has less drag).@fuck_cars_bot

@fuck_cars_bot (I mean, don't get me wrong -- the less-safe, smaller car is certainly a *lot* more appealing given Irish roads, but if I'm going to be in an accident, I really want the newer one.)

@kithrup @fuck_cars_bot Only really less safe because the people in the *big* cars have made themselves into tank. Why not have a smaller, more fuel efficient car?

@ariaflame Here's a funny thing to consider: Big cars nowadays are often more dangerous.- Weight (requiring more stopping power -> easier to overload the tires' grip, also more stopping distance).- "Comfortable" suspension (more body-roll, overloads outside tires easily, unsettles the weight during evasive maneuvers).- Higher (causing a higher CG, making it easier to roll over).- Decreased crash-compatibility.@kithrup @fuck_cars_bot

@finlaydag33k @kithrup @fuck_cars_bot But perception is what people make their choices on. Not facts.

@finlaydag33k @fuck_cars_bot you can have a big boot and still have not *that* wide a car.Our 2015 Skoda Fabia Estate, for example. Width 1958mm, boot capacity 530L.NB. Gave up having a car entirely when we lived in London. Down here is Devon we decided we did need one, but not that much.

@marjolica Well, do note that the 2019 Mini Countryman Cooper S is "only" 1822mm (so it's actually less wide).@fuck_cars_bot

@finlaydag33k @fuck_cars_bot I agree all car have fattened (as have we) but having been crammed into the original mini (with 4 others) in my youth I'll take the extra 136mm. And some of that will be needed to meet modern side impact protection standards.

@finlaydag33k @ariaflame @kithrup @fuck_cars_bot agreed, especially in hazardous weather. The joke in my house is that you never see an SUV ad that shows them braking .

@fuck_cars_bot They needed to make the cars bigger to fit the people who got obese from the heavily processed foods using corn syrups.
