@jeremiah@noagendasocial.com I'm pretty sure writing Louis to remove one of his videos is the fastest way to get him to make a video that's 100x worse than whatever you're trying to get taken down.I have a lot of respect for that.

@gabriel @jeremiah I'm listening to an interview with their founder Todd Weaver, and it immediately becomes obvious where their blind spot came from. He describes Purism as having "a social purpose first", "a strong belief system", and "ethical commitment" that they place before profit or shareholder value. So it's easy for them to frame every businesses decision through the lens of serving the greater good, as they see it at least.

@parker@pl.psion.co I could be wrong, but as I understand is PureOS is a very convenient option for trying to get as close as possible to a full Free Software System. I don't know the state of the hardware, but I'm willing to believe their effort is sincere. In light of that, I can see how it would be tempting to justify the mission over a couple of customers.Giving into that temptation is a big deal though, fruit from a rotten tree and all that. It is disappointing (and embarrassing) that they couldn't deliver on their promised. I know of at least one person first-hand who's had issues.@jeremiah@noagendasocial.com

@gabriel @jeremiah @parker Their email service requires you to give out your address, even if you are paying with crypto. That, along with their Librem 5 fiasco, made me distrust them.Stick with System76, ThinkPenguin, or Framework if you want to purchase Linux/open-source hardware.

@gabriel @jeremiah @parker I wanted to purchase one of their laptops, but when I needed a new computer two years ago, the chip shortage was going on and System76 was out of stock on everything. I had to bite the bullet and buy another laptop from BestBuy and install Linux on it.I would like to support them in the future though. I feel like it's important to support Linux and open-source hardware if we want to see a future for open-source software.

The fact they market their phone as the liberty phone seems weird. Wasn't there a patriot phone the rw youtubers were shilling a few years back? What about calyxOS? That one seemed pretty decent.

@parker@pl.psion.co For many people not being able to use android apps is a hard requirement so grapheneOS wins there. If you just need text/calls I have no idea how the Librem phone compares on that front. @jeremiah@noagendasocial.com

@blaaablaaaa @gabriel @jeremiah Also in the first sentence of their email to Louis Rossmann they're bragging about having worked with all levels of the Israeli government, as if working with national governments, particularly one famous for the surveillance activities, is supposed to instill confidence.

Oh gosh yeah, for some reason these "patriot" companies and others love bringing up being involved in mossad and israel tech stuff. I guess to the average boomer it's a huge selling point because it's like "tech spec" from our greatest ally. Wonder how many tech things the maxwell sisters still get involved in.

@parker @blaaablaaaa @gabriel @jeremiah The fact that the police tried to use surveillance tech on us Israelis all without a warrant is telling. But I'm sure you've got a lot of example of our shenanigans on outsiders as well.

@gabriel @parker @jeremiah FWIW: I have a Librem5 phone from Purism and it’s working well overall. It’s basically a Linux computer with a mostly-open hardware/software stack, and the phone-specific features are solid. The battery life isn’t nearly as good as modern high-end smartphones, but it’s a little better than I expected, so that was nice. If you need Android apps that’s currently a non-starter, of course—but they’re working on an emulator to cover that need (we’ll see).

What's the battery life? On a full charge my Pinephone with PostmarketOS gets about 4 hours of use time (on a call or other activities) and about 48 hours idle (on suspend but calls and texts call still come through). I did get an aftermarket Samsung battery though with 3600 mAH.

@charlie_root The battery life is heavily dependent on the usage. I’ve been getting ~6-8 hours of usage time (not gaming though), with Standby giving as much as 18-24 hrs. Purism recently deployed a similar patch to the Pinephone functionality—it optimizes Suspend in a way that still allows phone calls/SMS/MMS to come through. This has noticeably improved battery life for me.

> getting ~6-8 hours of usage time (not gaming though)Damn those are good numbers, beats the Pinephone. If I get to browsing firefox, texting and phone calls non-stop, it's gonna be dead by about 3-4 hours. The cool thing is that I don't normally do that, so the battery is good for someone who doesn't have smart phone addiction. But PostmarketOS has the idle time beat, I can unplug my phone and if I don't touch it, it will keep a charge for roughly 2 days.> Suspend in a way that still allows phone calls/SMS/MMS to come through. This has noticeably improved battery life for me.Yeah that's been a thing for awhile now thanks to CRUST (it a firmware optimization technique).Cheers to another Linux phone user 🥂

@charlie_root That being said, the usage-time depletes the battery far faster than other modern/optimized smartphones. I suspect that’s due to further CPU optimizations being needed. If you’re using the phone moderately during the day, you’ll definitely need to charge it by the evening.

Samsung, Google and Apple have sunken BILLIONS in R&D and paid devs to make that happen, mobile Linux is mostly community volunteers, don't feel bad. But hey, no more fucking spying by big tech 🥂

@charlie_root @gabriel @fcgreg @jeremiah All phones will probably take a dip in battery life, due to the EU legislating removable batteries for all phones. Good overall though.

@parker @charlie_root @gabriel @fcgreg what does removeability/replaceability have to do with capacity? Or are you suggesting they'll use the change-over as an excuse to ship crappier batteries and make more on the parts market?

@jeremiah @charlie_root @gabriel @fcgreg I think you can just stuff more in a smaller case with non-removable batteries, since you don't have to make affordances for the user (thinner battery housing, thin ribbon cable instead of more durable connection terminal). Though you can carry multiple batteries so it's not a big deal.

@parker @charlie_root @gabriel @fcgreg you can also design batteries to be backpackable -- a slim on that fits in the case, a fat one that covers the back of the case and expands the volume for power cells. There's no reason batteries have to have any particular form, so give or take the latching, sliding, or covering hardware and enclosures I don't imagine it would be a significant difference, but it's definitely something to watch for in specs. If it adds 2mm to the mobile's thickness... 🤷♂️

@Sophistifunk @parker i want a Soviet-engineered brick that will outlast the sun, making only voice calls, SMS, and playing music. I want replaceable everything -- a glorified stack of Legos in my pocket that allows everything to be replaced with nothing more than a Swiss Army Knife and five quiet minutes. My present phone is dying, I can't bring myself to buy any of the shit available on the market, and unless that Soviet brick appears in glowing light with angel voices, I may go pure VoIP.
