Wonderful piece by Jaron Lanier about what he’s learned from years of playing hundreds of instruments — and how the world of digital tools pales in comparison: https://www.newyorker.com/culture/the-weekend-essay/what-my-musical-instruments-have-taught-me“My fondest hope for computing is that digital devices will become as much like pianos as possible.”

@clive I first heard Lanier say that it is not weapons but musical instruments where every society most exercises their cutting edge technologies back in the 20th century, and it has animated my thinking about tech tools ever since

@clive lovely piece, and what a lovely attitude. But it’s dangerously encouraging my instrument-acquisition problem.

@clive this was a great read that I likely would have missed if you hadn't linked to it.

@clive @Miniver I can’t help but think of embodied cognition & how musical instruments can merge with us in a phenomenological sense because their rules are invariant. You can develop virtuosity because a well made instrument behaves well & consistently. While our digital tules keep being contorted & morphed to grab market share through “continuous improvement” that’s not really about supporting virtuosity & mastery for the user.

@clive This is deeply weird. A piano is profoundly analogue, like other real instruments. Although, Lanier is deeply weird too. I guess I have to read it.

@clive Soooooo many words. Yes, it would be nice to use digital tools in an analogue manner (see below), after thousands of hours of practice. It’s bonkers. Most people aren’t able to spend the time or interested in playing instruments. One element of V Vinge’s novel, Rainbows End (2006) is exactly about this sort of immersive digital-analogue toolset.Meanwhile, dedicated children play their game pads or keyboards with remarkable subtlety and finesse right now.

@edwiebe My thinking is that it’s ultimately a bit pointless to compare digital musical tools — ranging from MIDI, which he seems to mostly dislike, to software synths (ditto), to loops (which he had grudging appreciation for in the context of rap) — to analog ones; the fun is in using each for what they can uniquely do that the other can’t That said I’m a big fan of the remarkable artisanship in analog instruments

@Miniver @Andrewhinton Very true about analog instruments! There are some digital instruments, though, that musicians can become so fused with that they really do have that sense of union

@clive wonderful piece, indeed. Once upon a time, I was a music performance and computer science double major. Everyone asked me if I was making “computer music.” I said, “No. I’m a classically trained Bassoon player in symphony orchestras.” No music I’ve made on a computer has been satisfying to me. I also hope digital devices become more like pianos. I’ve had a piano in every house I’ve owned.
