Not a surprise to see some of this starting to happen. It actually makes sense for corporate entities to start their own instances of #Mastodon for sharing out information and building a network of followers that can't be capriciously switched off when some billionaire decides they no longer like you. ๐ Good on you @BBCRD Now how about a #PeerTube instance for your online video presence? I know a guy, if you're interested... ๐ https://www.bbc.co.uk/rd/blog/2023-07-mastodon-distributed-decentralised-fediverse-activitypub

@tilvids Yeah, it's good ...But it's still the #BBC - who have a long track record of pro-establishment output.I'd rather independent journalists start their own instances. But they've been slow on the uptake. But maybe they'll come ones the corporate news outlets have joined.

@tilvids unrelated, but I started requesting an account on tilvids.com, but stopped when I got a banner saying my account would not be able to upload videos. Is that as intended? I am looking for a decent Peertube instance to share train-related videos. So far the only instance where I was able to create an account also had a 5mb daily upload limit.

@tilvids@BBCRD @ChrisWereI'd still not join an instance that could be capriciously switched off by a quasi independant body that is supposedly using it for research #peertube #mastodon

@tilvids @BBCRD It needs to be emphasized that this is a non-joinable instance:โwe donโt allow users to create accounts or post from our server, but they can reply to our posts from their own servers."This is a good and necessary idea. On the other hand, it would be fun if I could join and had a chance to be an "official" BBC spokesman. No charge of course. :)

@rainynight65 @tilvids Tilvids is not your classic Peertube instance. Rather, its more like (free) Nebula - high quality educational material. I find it quite usefull for Linux-related stuff.

@JackOfAllTraits @rainynight65 Hello! If you're making edutainment content, and interested in sharing it with the #tilvids community, feel free to hop on over to our #Matrix chat room. The community/mods will take a look at your content, and if it works within our mission of edutainment, they can give you upload access.https://matrix.to/#/#tilvids:matrix.org

@lydiaconwell That is indeed a good point, Lydia and a massive challenge; How can independent journalists do independent journalism, given it hardly pays as it is, and at the same time, run internet infra? I ask with the intention to find solutions, not to challenge you! Maybe @tilvids has ideas too.

@kino It's not super expensive to run an instance. And many independent journalists can share the same instance and bourdon. The Canary has an instance, for example, but so far it hasn't been used. But I'd suggest journalists continue to use corporate platforms at the same time since those sites might be better places to get patrons. But ultimately those corporate sites always fail their users.@tilvids

@lydiaconwell @kino It's actually quite cheap to run instances of most federated services; it's the scale that's a challenge. For instance, spinning up a #PeerTube instance for yourself and a few others can probably be done for $20-30 a month. But if you want to scale that up to dozens or hundreds of creators, and then support thousands and tens of thousands of users...that's where it adds up.So if a company want to run an instance for itself...definitely possible, depending on the scale.
