We weren't allowed to watch Pee-Wee's Playhouse because my mom thought it was "too weird". She always made us fast-forward Star Trek IV's time-travel sequence for the same reason.

@PhilGastwirth Banning things for ridiculous reasons was pretty much my mom's whole parenting strategy. I also had to be careful not to be too enthusiastic about the things I liked, or she would decide that I was "obsessed" with them, and take them away from me. When I was at school she would go into my room and go through my stuff.

@PhilGastwirth Well, when she was a kid her older brother had a drug problem that her parents blamed on subliminal messages in rock n' roll music and all manner of crazy things except his bad choices. So she grew up with this idea that certain TV shows/movies, and music could brainwash kids into becoming juvenile delinquents. Then she married my dad when she was 16 so she never really had to live in the real world.
