I have really come to love Mastodon. So much so, I have followed everyone I found interesting, and everyone who has followed me.Now I am following 7,500 people, and while I really enjoy that, Mastodon now prevents me from following anyone else.I do not understand, why Mastodon would have such a rule. To me it seems very counterproductive to the whole concept of connecting with people from all over the world.

@randahl that seems like a weird error or instance limitation, I have seen accounts on mine follow 30,000+ accounts.

@NorCal_Lynne @randahl Not an error. It's hard-coded. I'd have to look but it's like following 1.2(?) times more people than follow you. As you post and more people follow you, the restriction will disappear again. I think there's also a daily limit in there, but it was quite high, if it's mastodon I'm recalling for that.

@randahl It's a universal limit, you can follow up to 7,500 and then a a ratio of 1.1x of your own followers (so if you have 7,500 followers, you can follow more people). We implemented it very long ago as an anti-abuse mechanism; similar limits exist on other social media platforms.

@stevesplace it is a hard limit. It has been exactly 7,500 for the last two weeks, and in this period around more people have started following me. The 7,500 has not changed.@NorCal_Lynne

@randahl @NorCal_Lynne The one thing mastodon is very good at is getting me to look at the code. I'll check.

@randahl @NorCal_Lynne You are correct, but the instance has control over it. Hard-coded it's 7500 follows and a follows ratio of 1.1. Both are overridden by environment variables, if they are set. There may be instances where the limit is higher or lower, based on what I see in the code. This instance clearly isn't one of them.Running one's own server has some advantages.

@randahl This isn't a very good choice by devs. It will definitely limit Mastodon adoption among larger popular accounts if it becomes widely known.

@randahl please tell me how you manage to keep on top of 7,500 follows - I follow 53, including yourself and the volume (and quality) is already amazing. Admittedly I do tend to go down the rabbit hole of reading threads.

@marjolica I simply do not keep on top of it. When ever I am not on Mastodon, a lot occurs, that I do not see. However, when I do open Mastodon, I now have an endless feed of interesting toots, and I love that.

@iuculano I think it is configured per Mastodon instance, and my instance is different from yours. @stux

@randahl this limit is specific to mastodon.social, I'm not entirely sure why though.(Mastodon has two settings that allow administrators to set upper limits on the number of followers, either as a ratio of following to followers, or as a hard limit)

@stux @randahl nope! Two environment variables. I put more information in the Mastodon discord's feedback channel iirc.
