I'm interviewing Florence Hazrat tomorrow for the Grammar Girl podcast. She's the author of "An Admirable Point" — a fabulous book all about the exclamation point. What would you like me to ask her?

@grammargirl What's her opinion on the interrobang? What's her view on punctuation change in online writing, where it seems to mark prosody and sarcasm more than grammar?

@grammargirl I don't have any suggestions, other than to point out that you'll save a lot of time, which you can use to ask more questions, if you use Victor Borge pronunciation.

@grammargirl Oh, wow! Now I want to read that book! 😀Let’s see… you could ask her:- what’s her opinion on how many exclamation points should be on an average page of text in a book or report?- what about using multiple exclamation points?- what does she think about the interrobang combining exclamation points and question marks?- to that end, why is it an “exclamation point” but a “question mark”, when both have a point base? (Or is that an American English thing?)

@grammargirl Continuing:- what are her thoughts on the inverted exclamation point ¡ used in Spanish? How did that come to be?- does her book go into how the exclamation point became called a “bang” in some contexts?(I ask as someone who remembers the “bang-path” addressing format we had in the pre-Internet days of UUCP where your address for email was literally something like “ucb!xyz12!mycomp!dan” )

@grammargirl I had a corporate client email me repeatedly and with increasing agitation about a sentence on a webpage that needed an "explanation mark". I kept asking questions -- did he want a footnote? endnote? parenthetical explanation? asterisk? What, for the love of all that is holy, is an explanation mark? What needed to be explained?Turns out he wanted an exclamation point at the end of the sentence.

@danyork The interview is out now, and we answered a bunch of your questions. In particular, the answer to your question about the inverted exclamation point in Spanish is around the 7-minute mark.

@multilingualchurch The interview is out now, and we answered both your questions. In particular, the question about how people use the exclamation point online to indicate prosody and sarcasm more than grammar is around the 5-minute mark. Florence thought it was an especially great question!
