I kind of urgently need to know how to preserve books so old I should wear gloves when handling them and am seriously considering a nitrogen filled case for at least one. We're talking physical volumes that are a legit hundred years old.

@legion303 @hB0mb ok, well, 100 usually doesn't need to be super crazy unless there's another aspect to them

@textfiles @legion303 @hB0mb I mean I accidentally crumbled the edge of a couple pages trying to turn them on one. Even with gloves and still air/no fan in the room I'll have to use a page turner knife thing. (I think a larger shim from my locksport stuff will do the trick, they're thin enough and some are large enough; I'm worried about surface area until I know for CERTAIN how much "give" is in the pages past "very little, DO NOT SNEEZE."Plus they're... uh, I think "very old books" + "belonged to my great-grandparents" + "my kids and I REALLY REALLY REALLY want to read these but without damaging them" + "back to the family heirlooms thing" = preserve these babies *heh*

@catbailey @legion303 @hB0mb that's the aspect that was wondering about. It sounds like it's the kind of paper that wasn't really built to last. You are going to definitely need a professional here. The book scanners that the archive uses are non-destructive to the books and could theoretically be used to do this work.

@textfiles @legion303 @hB0mb I mean they were... you know the MacMillan pocket editions that were published in the 1920s, the hardcover ones? A few are those, and those aren't the oldest ones. These were meant to be read and loved and carried around. If I do that NOW... heh, no.(I have a feeling there are a couple in there that might make a collector or two drool. Not necessarily over $$ value, but just "holy shit that still EXISTS?!")Also these smell SO GOOD!!! That wonderful old-book smell!!!!!
