I'm editing a piece that mentions the "valley girl stereotype," and I'm debating how to style it. I'm tempted to capitalize it since it comes, in part, from both a movie and song with that title. But you could also argue that it's genericized now. But I've also seen it written as "Valley girl," since we capitalize the nicknames of well-known places.None of my favorite style guides address the topic. What would you do?

@grammargirl I'd say "valley girl" because there's a current trend away from capitalisation. Unless the place is known as 'the Valley'.

@grammargirl I lived there for several years, I'd use Valley Girl, as that's how it was even way back when and I think holds the visual cue you're looking for.

@grammargirl I’ve only ever worked as an editor for a college newspaper and that was over 25 years ago, but if it’s not in your style guide my instinct would be:Valley Girl for references to the title of the movie or song.Valley girl when specifying a girl from the San Fernando Valley. But valley girl in talking about the motif in general.

@grammargirl As a native southern Californian, I went with “Valley girl”, since that phrase has always leaned heavily on the Valley in my mind. 😎

@grammargirl I went with Valley Girl because Kleenex has been essentially genericized but we still capitalize it. ∴ Valley Girl.

@grammargirl I feel like capitalizing could be a way to clue in readers that may not be familiar with the stereotype that there's something more to the term. That way if they're curious they can dig deeper and appreciate the context.

@grammargirl Off-topic/tangent: is the "Valley girl" actually a thing or just a product of that one record where one girl made up some fake slang for 30 seconds, hence "gag me with a spoon"? (I have never even been to LA, so forgive my lack of local knowledge. If any Los Angelenos would like to enlighten me, I'm here for it.)

@grammargirl I think this was a thing before the song. And although it originated in Valley Girl (apparently), I've always thought of it as a more generic term. Frank Zappa was from that area, if you didn't know. Maybe it was going on everywhere by just got associated with the location because of his association?

@grammargirl Since it's a specific area I'd capitalize the Valley, and online dictionaries seem to agree, while giving both Girl or girl as correct, so would come down to preference.

@grammargirl I’d lowercase it. Valley Girl implies a title of some kind. Valley girl, implies the start of a sentence or a girl from a specific Valley. Just my dos Pfennings.

@grammargirl for what it’s worth, Wikipedia has it as “valley girl”. I would agree, since the term has become more general, and it doesn’t specifically refer to somebody from the San Fernando Valley.https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valley_girl

@grammargirl The stereotype of a girl from the SFValley preceded the movie/song, and is tied to that location/culture, so "Valley girl" makes the most sense IMO

@grammargirl Based on my quick search, "Valley" is regarded as a formalized title of a place and is capitalized as such. But I find no evidence of “Valley Girl” as a formalized title for a person. Thus, "Valley girl" seems most appropriate to me.

@grammargirl @orionkidder Basically Moon Zappa wanted to do a song with her dad, so #FrankZappa brought her to the studio to basically recreate conversations with her friends from the Valley and satirize it (as #Zappa liked to do with basically everything). It was definitely a thing outside the song or movie.
