It’s winter solstice here in the far North — although many Norwegians would consider where I live to be south… — and there’s an almost palpable sense of relief knowing that henceforth the days get longer and nights get shorter. There’s snow covering the ground, the air is well below freezing, but while yesterday that felt like an ordeal, today it’s a sign of joy and life.#Solstice #Norway #WinterLandscape #Sunrise

@sotolf @benjaminhollon @benteh I always had trouble with the «where are you from?» question. I mean, the easy — and short — answer is Norway. But, when Norwegians ask (since they can’t figure it out from my dialect), it’s more challenging.I— was born in Oslo, but have not lived there since I turned 3— can trace my roots in Norway back to the beginning of record keeping, but in places I have never lived— went through school in 4 different countries— lived 27 years in Canada, but in 4 different cities, some thousands of kilometres and several time zones apart— currently live near Lillehammer, but while the place I live in *is* my home, the locals are very clear on the fact that I’m *not* from there— have a place on the southern Norwegian coast where I have spent most summers my entire live, but can a summer cabin be home?I have no idea where (specifically) I’m from…

@benteh @sotolf @benjaminhollon It’s an interesting sociological experiment. For some, the answer to the question «where are you from?» is as obvious as breathing. For others of us, it unleashes deep existential angst and philosophical introspection…I can’t understand why anyone would be annoyed by the question, though. Although, some might not enjoy having the validity of their responses questioned by others in the replies. 🤓

One of the defining voices — if not *the* defining voice — of my 20s. Way too young.RIP, Sinéad. 💔

I remember *that* episode of SNL, where Sinéad tore a picture of the Pope in two. I remember thinking how fantastic that was, what a statement using that platform to make that statement.I was shocked at how vilified she was after that, when what she had done was simply honest, brave, and true.

@christydena «from» seems correct to me, given that X is an entity and not an individual. But I’m not 100% sure if that’s actually correct. @grammargirl would likely know.

@grammargirl @jsit I couldn’t swear to it or anything, but I *think* I remember hearing that phrase used that way when I lived in Vancouver, BC in the 90s.

@grammargirl I’ll concede the point, but still: you can pry the Oxford comma from my cold, dead hands. But I will argue this is a case where more widespread use of the m-dash could help avoid confusion. As in, if «The Art of War» actually were Shumer’s memoir, then the sentence would read: «The Art of War» — Amy Shumer’s memoir — and many other books…Voila! Confusion avoided! And the Oxford comma lives on.

Repeat after me: a university is *not* a corporation, and should not be run like one. The former exists for the pursuit of knowledge, while the latter for the pursuit of profits. These are mutually incompatible.

@futurebird @mycotropic @WhiteCatTamer @RanaldClouston @rk @bookstodon I’d be curious to know too! The only Tchaikovsky I’ve read is Doors of Eden, which was a very enjoyable yarn.As for space opera that can be enjoyed by others than 14-year old boys (I have that same relationship to Heinlein — loved him as a teenager, loathed him as an adult), I most recently read the first two books of Bethany Jacob’s Kindom Trilogy. Most excellent page turner! Also, the Teixcalaan books by Arcady Martine are very good.

@futurebird I’ve had my gmail-account since it was still in beta… I’ve switched to another provider for my email (Runbox) but keep finding that gmail is intricately woven into my online presences—getting out is hard! Also, I have many people I collaborate with nationally and internationally, and they insist on using google docs for collaborative writing. Unfortunately, none of the alternatives are as flexible yet.
