The Web: simple, static, informational websites; mostly universities and some hobbyistWeb 2.0: Everything is dynamic on both the client and server side; controlled by megacorporations who exploit the massesWeb 3: Decentralized, not paid for by surveillance capitalism, powered by the people and voluntary donationsWeb 4.0: Augmented and virtual reality. The same crappy office jobs as before, only the office is virtual to save the megacorps money while still using the unproductive paradigm.

The Fediverse is an example of where I feel like web3 is better than web1.

@sr3 LOL, you can stick to your corporate web2. Have fun with that. I'm going to choose to hang out with people building community based solutions and donations instead of extortion.I'm just going to ignore people who aren't interested in an honest discussion of ideas. That would include people you refer to as "cryptobros" as well as the people who think all digital currencies are bad without considering the actual topic at hand. Peace out

@adam Web3 isn’t that though. It’s cryptocurrency and nft grifting. It’s blockchain as a solution searching for a problem. Even if Web3 were to mean a spike of self-hosting, how many are doing that hosting on AWS, Azure, and GCP?

@skipfordjweb3 is a decentralized web. It's not a "grift", it's a different economic model for the web that doesn't rely on #SurveillanceCapitalismDecentralized payment is a key component, but that doesn't require any blockchains (or NFTs) at all. There are decentralized payment systems that are not blockchain based.Decentralizing to communities controlled by the people and hosted on AWS et al would be an improvement over what we have in web2, and it'd be the basis for further improvement.

@skipfordj There are people who want everyone to believe that the only way to have a sustainable internet that isn't funded by selling people's data is their specific implementation of what they're pitching and claim that is the only possible web3.They are wrong. There are many ways the ideas of web3 could be implemented. We should not let them define the vision for a new version of the internet, nor should we stick with the exploitation of people's information that we have today (aka web2.0)

@adam Ah, my apologies for not grokking the nuance here. The current, vernacular web3 is strongly associated with the grifting and scamming going on by those in the cryptocurrency and NFT arenas. For example, https://web3isgoinggreat.com/Unfortunately, I do not have even a good idea (let alone a viable one) about how to return the association of the term with the ideals you've mentioned.
