Two days with the Fairphone now. I was surprised, all the apps I use work on /e/OS. Venmo, my credit union, even Google Maps seem to run fine with microG. I might be a bad example though, as I mostly used open source apps before the switch.:acomfyangryfire: The bad is Murena, the reseller they partnered with when launching in the US. The calendar app prompts you to add an account for syncing. Ok, syncing the calendar is fine, so I make one.If you add a Murena account, it uploads all your phone's data, like photos, to their cloud. It does not ask permission to do this. It does not even tell you it will do this. I found out only because of a notification later that I had used 90% of the 1GB storage they allow for free. Immediately deleted the account. This is horrible behavior for a device marketed as privacy-focused.

@rizele Also, don't try to lock the bootloader after flashing the stock ROM. They blamed me despite following their instructions and charged me 59€ to fix it, after they quoted me 32€ when I initially queried.

@thatbrickster What happened that you had to flash it again?

@rizele Doing it for a friend. They wanted the same Android version as myself but we found some apps refused to work with microG. I was flashing the stock ROM according to Fairphone's instructions as the critical partitions needed to be flashed. Upon locking the bootloader I was unable to boot the phone. I knew what was wrong and what was needed to fix it, but the tool wasn't publicly available. That's where I raised it with them and argued over the pricing when their French repair partner was involved. All in all, not an experience I would want again. This is my first, and will be my last, Fairphone device.

@rizele What's the battery life on it, out of interest?

@thatbrickster Good to know, thanks! This is my first experience with them, having finally launched in the US. Repairs go through Murena.

@djabadu I had 60% left at the end of the day, which is slightly more than my old Nokia 7.1. I only have one day so far to compare with however. The battery is replaceable in this however.

@rizele@blob.cat curious... have you tried other privacy forward OSes (Graphene, Lineage?) How does /e/OS compare, if so?

@Melpomene I do not have much to compare it with. Years ago I had a Motorola with Cyanogenmod. More recently Nokias with stock Android. I got it more for the repeatability and long support life than the OS.

@rizele Fucking great. Why does it seem like America can never have a truly good and privacy-focused mobile OS?

@rizele@blob.cat good ol' Cyanogen! I do like the fairphone concept, and I somewhat wish I'd not just bought this phone.

@kkarhan Me too. The device itself is solid in both build and their support for community efforts, such as Ubuntu Touch. My main gripe is with Qualcomm for keeping their factory software behind an NDA (my allegation) and the French repair partner for ripping me off, no thanks to Fairphone Support.@rizele @Fairphone

@kkarhan @lispi314 @Fairphone I think you're exaggerating it here. Creating that account is optional, it's not an integral part of the OS or anything. I don't even mind the ability to sync pictures and stuff, just that it should not do that without making it clear to the user that will happen.

@rizele Murena’s behaviour is kinda creepy IMHO. They seem to want to replace Google on your phone and do exactly the same as what Google was doing. De-googling is about getting rid of Google and all their crap, not replacing it with another suite that does the same.During their launch livestream their website was full of third party analytics (including some of Google’s crap). On that same livestream they claimed to stand against that exact kind of behaviour.

@whynothugo I don't mind that they offer similar services to Google, but that the default behavior is contradictory to how it is marketed.
