Every time I visit another European country I’m sorely disappointed that paying with European money is so hard.

@lanodan Ever since I moved to Netherlands in 2019 I've found it ridiculous how I need to use the American card system to buy online from Belgium or Germany. I hear that Ideal is expanding to these countries in 2026.

It’s extremely annoying that so many APIs in Rust (both the language and the stdlib) panic instead of returning an error. At least there are linters for many of these, but we do need to enable those lints manually.

@lanodan The nomem changes address a huge deal of errors. Slice indexing and alike is still panicky instead of fallible.

@lanodan The stlib only supporting utf-8 path names is a big mistake IMHO. I have old back-ups in DVDs which can't be accessed with anything written in hare. It seems like a very high-level decision for such low-level interface.

@lanodan Yeah, syscalls ought to take a byte slice, and leave the rest to the call site.

@martijnbraam After you plug in some USB drive or gamepad, webcam, etc.: do you need to be determine which modules are missing for that device and fetch them?

@0xabad1dea I'm not surprised that it contains £11 of gold, video cards are pretty expensive.

@pitrh @0xabad1dea I’ve never really understood why libressl didn’t pick up.

@pitrh @0xabad1dea 11 years ago. It's clear that things have not changed either, a discussion from 3 years ago echos the exact same sentiments:"the OpenSSL developers appear to want to focus on developing new features rather than cleaning up the mess of regressions they have created with OpenSSL 3."From https://gitlab.alpinelinux.org/alpine/tsc/-/issues/28

@navi @lanodan The mian advantage is that you can change a getter from “return an internal field” to “return a field in an internal structure” or to computed property, all while maintaining API compatibility. The runtime cost is real, and ideally you want the language/compiler to optimise the “it’s just an internal field” case.

@ekuber The people in power are either in favour to this or too worried about their own position to do anything. Never been history have people at the top suddenly decided to stand up for the common folk. It’s the common folk who need to stand up for themselves or be crushed.I apologise for having to put it on such clashing tone, but: nobody else is going to stand up for the American people, it’s Americans who need to take a stand for themselves.

@aj It’s quite a beast in terms of resource usage. Even for a single user, the baseline is quite high. Not sure about the last couple of years, but 4GB RAM used to be insufficient for a single-user no-CI setup.

So Dutch banks want to stop relying on American corporations like Visa and Mastercard, and are launching "Wero" a new online payment mechanism which is only usable via an "app" for iOS or Android, and not usable on the web or regular computers.Do I really need to point out that Google and Apple have the exact same risks as Visa and Mastercard? I can't believe this isn't obvious to everyone else, sometimes I feel like I'm going crazy.

@witcher To be clear: this isn't _replacing_ US services in the payment area, it's just changing which ones we rely on. From Visa+Mastercard to iOS+Android.I don't find this to be an improvement. Someone can use Maestro card (the usual in NL) without having to buy a device from Google/Apple. This just serves to erode the influence of phone vendors done outside the US.

@witcher For online payments, the current Dutch standard (iDEAL) supports paying online without Visa/Mastercard as intermediary, so Wero seems like a strong step down. And using a phone number as an account identifier is so absurd. As if phone number didn't expire or get re-used. We already have IBAN numbers which might be longer, but everybody copy-pastes them anyway. So far they communicate that an app will be necessary and the only choice.
