@freezenet >Second, the Australian NMBC says that if Google and Meta decide not to show news on their platforms then they cannot show any news at all from anywhere. In this context, it would mean that if Google and Facebook remove news it would not just be news focused on a Canadian audience but all news from anywhere in the world however targetedOh please, please, I have been waiting for this day for long :marioawe: It might actually go and destroy all mainstream news organization and/or ruin social media also in the process, that would be phenomenal. Couldn't ask for anything better

>Second, the Australian NMBC says that if Google and Meta decide not to show news on their platforms then they cannot show any news at all from anywhere. On one hand, I don't want Australia's nanny state government to think they have this kind of retarded jurisdictional reach for anything. But on the other, this would be the most utterly devastating backfire for news media of all time.

@Hoss @freezenet This is exactly why I hope, especially Google, doesn't back down. We're actually approaching a possible future where Google might do a service blackout and we'll see how much the gov starts to panic if this happens

Immediate hilarious chaos hopefully followed by calls for institutions to de-Google themselves so they don't become a casualty of anything like that ever again.

@Hoss @freezenet god, the mutually assured destructions that could be going on would be phenomenal, imagine how much we could win-Destruction of the terrible legacy and MSM media-Destruction of Google and people stopping depending on them-Mainstream social media gets BTFOWhich would make it a more likely return to the old netI'm just salivating at the possibilities. It just feels like we're racking constant wins lately and the bad institutions, govs, big tech, etc. are just taking Ls after Ls

@Hoss @freezenet the thing is that the institutions are getting greedy as fuck, not just in the monetary sense, but they cannot even see a step ahead anymore, that's how they're constantly taking Ls. They don't even bother with the mask nowReal "fall of the empire" state we're in right now

It just seems way too good to be true that the masters have overplayed their hands and are desperate for everyone not to notice.

@sim @Moon @freezenet besides I don't think we're using Anglos as English (the UK), but Anglos as Anglophone, just English speaking. All the English speaking governments are currently a fucking disaster

@coolboymew @Hoss@shitpost.cloud I'm not so sure Google (or Facebook for that matter) will actually get hurt by this. The data was pretty consistent in that very few interactions revolve around news for them.I mean, even I would shrug off an, at most, 2% loss in traffic and carry on like nothing happened. The media companies, however, are a different story with seeing stats of 40%-60% in a potential loss of traffic. Any cash strapped media organization would, at minimum, get a new limp from that.

@freezenet depends on if the government doubles down, obviously I'm getting a tad ahead of myself, but stopping the ad funding is step 1. And as hoss suggested, it could result in de-googling, stopping using their google e-mail/drive, etc. suit and such. It's just a possible really exciting prospect as someone on the fediverse

@freezenet @coolboymew And here in Canada I'm sure the big players like Postmedia and Bell will get big handouts in return, with no stipulations like "and use that to actually pay people" so they'll just continue to cut coverage, especially local news and investigative journalism, anyways. Mind you all that has been and would happen without this bill or any reaction from Facebook and Google anyways.

@keithzg @freezenet Money or no money, the quality of the content isn't going to change or improve, that's for sure. This is why legacy media being hurt is overall pretty exciting, as it could shake up an old industry that just needs to die and be reborn at this point

@keithzg @coolboymew Indeed. With the government already openly contemplating issuing massive bailouts, the hedge fund managers and CEOs will be happy in the end. The actual people behind news coverage? Not so much.

@coolboymew @freezenet Eh, I wish I could be that optimistic. Barring a radical change in political power in this country I would assume like previous shakeups of the media industry it will largely just mean more consolidation and costcutting while independent outlets continue to dwindle. People know they can go to ctv.ca, they don't know they can go to thenarwhal.ca, so the big outlets (alongside getting government subsidies) can still get traffic while without visibility on mainstream social media and related services the smaller ones which have appeared over the past years will have an even harder time getting noticed by the public. That's my much more pessimistic guess, at least.
