@mcc @ice That sounds so damn cool; reminds me of how my main University library had detectors that put out enough EMR at the right frequencies to cause earbuds to hum, but also they were often broken—when I was dodging library fees because they'd missed a return I'd made and I was being stubborn about it, I'd use that to know when I could take books in or out of the library ;)

@mpjgregoire @gemlog Maybe they're indeed lower than they are otherwise, but as that 2022 BC-focused article states, it's clearly not enough to matter:> However, given the praise carbon taxes have received in both literature and policy, the absence of a statistically detectable effect in aggregate emissions is sobering. Any tax-induced aggregate emission reductions do not appear to be detectable in the data and thus are far from climate policy targeting net-zero emissions by mid-century. Regardless of whether the absence of a statistically-significant reduction stems from a short sample, low tax rate, or incomplete coverage, the resulting implication for climate change is the same—there has not been a substantial detectable change in aggregate emissions in response to the introduction of this tax....> Detected significant reductions in aggregate CO2 emissions across Canadian provinces, in turn, do not coincide with the implementation of the BC carbon tax, nor the carbon pricing schemes in Alberta and Quebec. Instead, the detected interventions in aggregate emissions reflect the closures of emission-intense industries (pulp and paper with accompanying power-generating facilities) and reforms in electricity generation in untaxed provinces such as New Brunswick and Nova Scotia transitioning away from fossil-fuel driven electricity generation. That being said, the author certainly expresses some optimism that, since there are at least measurable impacts when confining to just the transportation sector in B.C., perhaps significantly higher carbon tax rates than done in B.C. could have meaningful impacts. I have not paid close enough attention, so I could be wrong, but I was under the distinct impression that the Federal carbon tax rate was lower than British Columbia's, rather than significantly higher, so the prospect of a continued Trudeau admin merely defending or even meagerly increasing it certainly does not excite or comfort me . . .Linking to the paper again since I'm posting this reply as public and certainly discussions of the efficacy (or not) of #CarbonTax measures might have general interest outside of even just #Canpol. https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s10640-022-00679-w

I've said it before, I'll say it again: use distro package managers. Do not use language-specific package managers. FOR FUCKS SAKE DO NOT USE NPM! https://blog.vlt.sh/blog/the-massive-hole-in-the-npm-ecosystem

@feld Yeah that doesn't solve the core problems but it would nonetheless be nice if one only had to use a single interface for all package management! I'm not sure I'll ever forgive Red Hat for introducing PackageKit, a buggy extra layer of abstraction that's kinda pointless unless it's able to handle multiple different package and repo types, and then introducing Flatpak and refusing to add Flatpak support to PackageKit. Far from the worst thing Red Hat has done, mind you, but as someone who never got into any RPM-based distros it's the one that most directly affects me personally...(On that note I find it a bit weird that over in the Arch-based world, Pamac acts as a simultaneous frontend for pacman and flatpak in its GUI form but *not* its CLI form. Admittedly I've rarely found a use for Flatpak packages outside of GUI apps, but still!)

@corbin @kde I dunno, the details seem to be pretty solid in terms of internal goals and dreams, I don't think one can say Microsoft hasn't internally and even externally expressed this desire, and it's nothing new—they've been making such noises at least since Azure was announced, in part to appeal to investors by talking up cloud hype. But it's also true that Microsoft has a long, long tradition of promising the moon and barely reaching the treetops (see for example WinFS) so I wouldn't worry too much about it anytime too soon. That being said I definitely run KDE both at work and at home, heh.

So if Threads actually federates and I don't bother to block them, what will your instance do in regards to *my* instance? (Feel free to boost, my own posts probably don't have statistically significant reach, I'm primarily interested in what folks in my vague Fediverse circles think but the more data the more interesting polls are.)

@clacke @gemlog Not to cheer for Meta but it sure makes a strong contrast that their offering has public web access (and link previews and whatnot) on day one while both Elon's Twitter and Jack's replacement Twitter currently don't. That alone makes me think Threads is indeed poised to replace Twitter in mainstream usage.

@mjg59 I'm very curious about this myself. The main bit I remember from back in that day is https://felipec.wordpress.com/2011/06/21/my-disagreement-with-elop-on-meego/ which is only a single very tiny peak into things.

@freezenet @coolboymew And here in Canada I'm sure the big players like Postmedia and Bell will get big handouts in return, with no stipulations like "and use that to actually pay people" so they'll just continue to cut coverage, especially local news and investigative journalism, anyways. Mind you all that has been and would happen without this bill or any reaction from Facebook and Google anyways.

@wjmaggos @davidgerard @BBCRD I wouldn't have, but I often perversely like arguing and also have a *much* smaller account than David does. I can only imagine with as visible of an account as he has, one has to be freer with blocks lest the noise become quickly impractical to listen through (and patience has probably also long since worn through).

I am having an absolutely terrible time trying to get ActiveState Perl installed. Literally my opinion of #PostgreSQL has dropped dramatically due to it being a stated requirement for Windows builds, it's that unacceptably bad...

Are there any Perl dists for Windows that I can actually just . . . like . . . install normally? Or can anyone explain to me how to install #ActiveState #Perl with this bizarre, seemingly git-backed setup they have which seems to just result in a folder empty other than a single .yaml file (and for which the uninstall command for the "state" utility I seem to be supposed to use just throws an error and gives up)?

The cli utility in question told me to use state learn to find out how to use it but that just takes me to https://platform.activestate.com/state-tool-cheat-sheet which seems to put me no closer to my goal of “just have Perl installed”

Abandoned ship, though I remain very very curious how this was considered reasonable by anyone. Though in fairness these days as soon as I see a .yaml file anywhere I tend to go “oh, shit, this is some software with insane build and usage nonsense that only corporate devs think is remotely acceptable”.Conversely, #StrawberryPerl installed very easily and obviously, and all I needed to do was add its bin folder to my %PATH% et voila, it built the part of PostgreSQL I needed to build just fine.Seems pretty silly the #PostgreSQL docs recommend, borderline insist, on using ActiveState Perl when Strawberry Perl provides #Perl in a far more “actually provides it to you” way :P

@blogdiva What especially drives me crazy is how JSON doesn't support comments, a machine-only format for a messy human world
