@malakai Ubuntu does offer free token for personal use for up to 5 machines. But it requires you to use an account. Now, that's fine if it was just for optional updates. But its outrageous to push it by withholding security updates.

To make it even worse, when you try to use #Ubuntu Pro, it wants to install canonical-livepatch snap. I don't want any snap on my servers. I specifically disabled and masked the service so it won't even run in background. #Linux #Server

@hirad@mastodon.hirad.it that's good to know. I don't know if non profit but open registration instances will count as "personal use" or not

I think it would, since it's your personal website. I think the idea is that charging data centers and companies a fee for the service of maintaining updates and security fixes for an LTS version into 2025 helps with paying employees to do the job of backporting fixes and packages. I know we have all enjoyed the luxury of people doing it for free for us, but that gets to be hit and miss.

@charlie_root@decayable.ink I get the financial perspective and agree with it. The freebies don't last forever. What I'm concerned with is navigating the purposefully obtuse legalese. If they don't consider this personal use, then Pro pricing will probably drive me out to some other OS.OR I can hope that nobody exploits the open vulnerabilities on my server :kys_thonk:

Honestly I doubt they would care about a fediverse instance. I'm using pro on my Lubuntu 22.04.2 LTS system and the only thing they asked for was for me to make an account. That's the last I ever even heard from them, they don't even spam my email.
