@briankrebs @Cleopatra @happyborg @malwaretech The extortion is releasing source code, extorting large corporations. No customer code or data, as per Microsoft. It's like the definintion of an acceptable target. If anything, I don't think software companies should be *allowed* to have closed source software, so I'm particularly unsympathetic when their shit security results in their software becoming involuntary FOSS lol.The idea that we should be jailing or fining children to protect the sanctity of intellectual property on behalf of megacorps that we know are hurting the planet is just absurd. Sure, legally they've got the courts on their side, but like the law's not legitimate to begin with.

@Helmic Trying to ban proprietary software will sadly get us nowhere, to get rid of it, society needs to completely reject proprietary malware, but that's not happening.>results in their software becoming involuntary FOSS lol.Just because some proprietary software has its source leaked doesn't make it free software or "open source".Such source is mostly useless, as it may be illegal to merely have a copy of it and distributing it modified or unmodified would infringe copyright law and maybe some trade secret laws.

@SuiseisekiThe point is mocking this myopic obsession with intellectual property to the point some ex-wapo shithead is wringing his wrists about some autistic kid not going to prison over it. This idea that society owes anything to these companies is absurd. Yeah, legally you can't incorporate leaked code into anything, but legal systems are a human construct and we could totally choose to ignore this nomsemse claim that someone can own an idea like they can own a chair. It was a passing joke but like I joke about it because I dislike these companies being able to leverage the resources of multiple countries' intelligence agencies to protect the sanctiry of this deeply harmful legal construct.
