What is your best strategy to catch up on your #Mastodon feed when you’ve been away for a day or two? That’s a use case where I can see some sort of ranking algorithm being valuable.Or a feature that would allow me to scroll not to the most recent post in my feed but like the Nth hundred most recent one.

You’ve been away from #Mastodon for 24 hours. You return to 1500 unread posts in you feed. What do you do?

@anders The app that I’m using remember where in the timeline I left off so I just have to scroll up for new posts.

@anders I tend to open Ivory and start from where I left off. I usually have under 100 to catch up with even if it’s been 24hrs since last opened (tho’ rare not to check for that long).I suppose if you follow a lot of chatty accounts and see several hundred toots ahead of you it will be far more daunting. I have this problem with Glass. I can go many many weeks without opening the app. Then I get anxiety about trying to catch up and so the avoidance process continues.

@heyimandreas Yeah, so do mine. But the problem is where “up” mean thousand of posts to read. :)

@purplelime Well, yes, cutting back on the number of accounts I follow is something I am considering. :)And yes, again, feel the same in relation to Glass to some extent. But here I’m in part professionally, and don’t want to miss things that are of real importance too me. Glass is more of a hobby, even though important too me. 📸

@anders Me personally would scroll upwards really fast and try to be focused as to not miss a good post. But yeah, some type of rating might be a good idea, a “While you were gone” summary of sorts.

@anders when it was busier here some weeks ago during WWDC there were 200+ posts overnight, so I tapped to the top and read back over during breakfast. I think not seeing the number of unread toots sometimes takes away the catch-up anxiety.

@anders I don't really go through my entire feed since I have hashtags there too, but I would only go to my notifications then start reading the lastest posts. I also have a list of accounts who post interesting stuff, so I read all of that, but it's not much.

@purplelime Yeah, putting numbers of those things add anxiety for sure. Most of the time I tap at the top. But compared to Twitter where I had some mechanisms in place to catch the gold nuggets I'm longing for something similar here.

@writeblankspace But of course! Had forgotten that the list feature is here as well! Heavy list user on Twitter, for that exact use case!

@anders would creating a list of your more important accounts be helpful, so that you can check on those first? I haven’t done that here as I follow a manageable amount of people at the moment.

@anders Don't bother. If you don't have time to read everything it doesn't matter what you read and what you don't read.

@jtb Isn't the opposite true? If I *do* have time to read everything, it doesn't matter?

@jtb I rather feel like having not enough time makes it more important to decide what to read. What's your line of thinking here? :)

@anders I haven't done this yet, but one thing that might help is to have a list of accounts that are "must read" for you, that you can look at when there's a huge backlog, as it will let you get at what's most important.Perhaps even have both a "must read" and a "maybe read" list.

@cordelya Yep! Used to be a heavy lost user over at Twitter. Don’t know why I overlooked that option here. Right now deep down in some list-building! :)

@andersNothing. I just continue where I left off and I don't scroll down. If there are some people who's posts I'm interested in, I go to their profile.
